In 1833, following the Black Hawk War, Charles Reed built a cabin along the west side of the Des Plaines River. Across the river in 1834, James B. Campbell, treasurer of the canal commissioners, laid out the village of "Juliet", a name local settlers had been using before his arrival. The origin of the name was most likely a corruption of the name of French Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet, who in 1673, along with Father Jacques Marquette, paddled up the Des Plaines River and camped on a huge mound, a few miles south of present-day Joliet. Maps from Jolliet's exploration of the area, placed a large hill or mound on what is now the southwest corner of the city, since there is no point that is farther southwest. That hill was named Mound Jolliet. The spot was mined by early settlers and is now a depression. Just before the economic depression of 1837, Juliet incorporated as a village, but to cut tax expenses, Juliet residents soon petitioned the state to rescind that incorporation. In 1845, local residents changed the community's name from "Juliet" to "Joliet". Joliet was reincorporated as a city in 1852. Cornelius Cohenhoven Van Horne was active in getting the city its first charter, and because of this he was elected Joliet's first Mayor. When the city later built a new bridge it was named The Van Horne Bridge.
Although today the state's largest population center is around Chicago in the northern part of the state, the state's European population grew first in the west, with French Canadians who settled along the Mississippi River, and gave the area the name, Illinois. After the American Revolutionary War established the United States, American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s via the Ohio River, and the population grew from south to north. In 1818, Illinois achieved statehood. After construction of the Erie Canal increased traffic and trade through the Great Lakes, Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, at one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan.John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow turned Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. Railroads carried immigrants to new homes, as well as being used to ship their commodity crops out to markets.
Though soon outclassed by newer and larger vessels, Illinois was destined to enjoy a long and distinguished career, first as a transatlantic passenger liner and later as the U.S. Navy'sauxiliary vesselUSSSupply. In the 1870s, Illinois may have been the first ship to successfully transport a shipment of fresh meat from the United States to Europe, twenty years before the introduction of refrigeration. As USS Supply, the ship served in both the Spanish–American War and the First World War, and crew members may have been the first United States personnel to fire a hostile shot in the latter. Illinois was scrapped in 1928.

Joliet created maps from his exploration and labeled this mound Mount Joliet. The mound was later flattened as a result of mining operations.
The first recorded resident of Joliet was Charles Reed in 1833. In 1834, the village of "Juliet" was laid out by James B. Campbell. In 1845, local residents changed the name from Juliet to Joliet, reflecting the original name.
The quarrying of "Joliet limestone" was a huge industry in the late 19th century, earning the city a nickname of "City of Stone". At its peak, Joliet was shipping more than 3,000 rail car loads of Limestone per month across the midwest.
The Joliet Steel Mill opened in 1869, which attracted thousands of European immigrants to the area. The large manufacturing labor force in the city attracted many other industries, and Joliet soon became a regional hub of manufacturing. A huge variety of products were manufactured in Joliet - wire mills, stove companies, horseshoe factories, brick companies, machine manufacturers, canning companies, bridge builders, greeting cards and calendars, clothing, beer, pianos, windmills, and wallpaper were among the biggest industries.
In the 1970s, manufacturing left Joliet and by 1983 the unemployment rate was at 26%.
The local economy slowly recovered as Joliet transitioned from a manufacturing center to a commuter suburb for the Chicago area. Many Joliet residents commute to and work in adjacent Cook County.
Joliet has two casinos - Harrah's Joliet and Hollywood Casino Joliet.
The Chicagoland Speedway, which hosted NASCAR races until 2019, is located in Joliet.
The largest local employer is Amazon, which has a distribution center in Joliet.
Joliet has been featured in multiple films including 2019's "Working Man", 1973's "The Sting", 1980's, "The Blues Brothers". The Joliet Prison (closed in 2002), has been the site of many other films and television shows including Fox's "Prison Break".

The median household income was $77,373 and the Per capita income was $31,390. 10.7% of the population were living below the poverty line.

Filmed on Wednesday, July 5 2023, I drive around downtown Joliet, IL in the rain to see what's going on.
In 1673, Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette ventured up the Des Plaines River and camped out on a huge earthwork mound, a few miles south of present day Joliet.
