Johnnie Johnson, RAF Spitfire Ace, This is Your Life (complete)
I uploaded a 9-minute extract of Johnnie Johnson's 'This is Your Life' back in 2010 (https://youtu.be/h1K1RqLpcY8). This is the full 50-minute programme. Johnnie was Britain's highest-scoring fighter pilot during WWII with 38 kills to his name - all of them single engine fighter planes. He lived for a while in the same village as me, Waltham on the Wolds, where his father was a local police sergeant. I got to know someone who was a close friend of his. He let me borrow this recording as a VHS tape. As well as another where Johnnie speaks at a local game-shoot. This includes a fascinating description of how he was first rejected by the RAF (https://youtu.be/totM4Sa-T3M).

The solitary German pilot was about to discover what made James Edgar Johnson the highest-scoring Western Allied fighter ace against the German Luftwaffe.

Johnnie Johnson was Britain's highest scoring fighter pilot during WWII with 38 kills to his name - all of them single engine fighter planes. This very poor quality recording - a copy of a DVD, copied from a VHS tape - was taken in 1991 when he was 76. He had been invited to speak at a recently-established game shoot in Edmondthorpe in Rutland called the 'Somme Shoot'. A number of local WWI veterans had been invited to a dinner after the day's shoot.
Johnnie told them: "We like to think that we had learned something from you gentlemen of the first contest in the first war with the same foe - a pox on them by the way!". He also explains what happened when he first applied to join the RAF: he told the officer that he did not belong to any local fox-hunts, having spent all his money on flying lessons. And never heard back!
