Cherokee Tribe History
The Cherokee are Native American people that originally lived in the American southwest. The Cherokee language is part of the Iroquoian language group. By the 19th century, American settlers had classified the Cherokee of the Southeast as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" in the region. They were agrarian, lived in permanent towns, and had begun to adopt some cultural and technological practices of the settlers. They also developed their own writing system.

Lecture on the Cherokee Indians
A history of the Cherokee people, from prehistory to the present. The bulk of the lecture covers the late 1700's to the removal of the tribe from their ancestral homelands to the west, in what is now Arkansas and Oklahoma, in what is now referred to as the Trail of Tears.
The Cherokee became the most assimilated, westernized of any Native American tribe, with a written language, settled farming communities, and a constitution modeled on the U.S. constitution. That did not, however, save them from being expelled from their lands.
