The First Ecologist: John Ruskin and the Futures of Landscape
This lecture traces John Ruskin's dramatic and contradictory career from his exquisitely precise drawings of clouds, rocks, leaves, and sculptured walls and niches, into his storm-driven middle years, when his despair over the deterioration of landscape matched his fierce belief that science, art, and writing were but differing routes to the same truth: Nature as the source of the greatest art and the ultimate guarantor of human values.

John Ruskin and Effie Gray
John Ruskin was the leading art critic of the Victorian era. He married Euphemia Gray and they holidayed in Venice. It was a dysfunctional marriage which was never consummated. The marriage was doomed from the outset. In the city he was preoccupied with recording the city's architectural treasures.
He was a complex character, and a quintessential Victorian, as he was both born and died within months of Queen Victoria.

Brave Confident face -The Order of Release by John Everett Millais #painting #history #arthistory
The Order of Release, 1746 is a painting by John Everett Millais exhibited in 1853. It is notable for marking the beginnings of Millais's move away from the highly medievalist Pre-Raphaelitism of his early years. Effie Gray, who later left her husband John Ruskin for Millais, modelled for the female figure.
The painting depicts the wife of a Highland Jacobite soldier, who has been imprisoned after the Jacobite rising of 1745, with an order securing his release. She holds her child, showing the order to a guard, while her husband embraces her.
