John Randolph Bray (August 25, 1879 - October 10, 1978) was an American animator. He produced the first animated film in color, The Debut of Thomas Cat (1920), in Brewster Color.Bray Productions produced over 500 films between 1913 and 1937, mostly animation films and documentary shorts. Cartoonist Paul Terry worked briefly for Bray Studios in 1916.
The entertainment branch of Bray Pictures Corporation closed in 1928. Documentary production for theatrical release continued through the late 1930s. The educational and commercial branch, Brayco, made mostly filmstrips from the 1920s until it closed in 1963. Bray Studios was still in operation in the 1970s, shortly before Bray died at the age of 99 in 1978.
Jam Handy's company, the Jam Handy Organization, began as a Chicago-Detroit division of Bray Studios, to service the auto industry's need for industrial films. Jam Handy made several thousand industrial and sponsored films and tens of thousands of filmstrips, many for the auto industry, closed in 1983.
Randolph was the only native of Colonial Virginia to receive a knighthood.
Randolph married Susanna Beverley (the daughter of Peter Beverley, a Speaker of the House of Burgesses and Treasurer of Virginia, and Elizabeth Peyton, and sister of Elizabeth Beverley, the wife of his brother William Randolph II) around 1718 and the couple had at least four children who reached adulthood:
John Randolph (1727 – January 31, 1784) was a lawyer from Williamsburg in the British colony of Virginia. He served as king's attorney for Virginia from 1766 until he left for Britain at the outset of the American Revolution.
Randolph was born in Williamsburg into one of the most prominent families of Virginia. His father was Sir John Randolph, the only colonial Virginian to be knighted. The younger Randolph was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, his cousin, with whom he often played violin.
He married Ariana Jenings (c.1727-1808) on July 26, 1750 in Annapolis, Maryland. They had three children.
During the revolutionary crisis, Randolph remained a Loyalist, unlike his brother Peyton Randolph, and his son, Edmund Randolph. In 1774, he wrote "Considerations on the Present State of Virginia", in which he called for reconciliation between his fellow colonists and Great Britain. He boycotted the Virginia Convention, an extralegal convening of the House of Burgesses headed by his brother Peyton. When hostilities began, Randolph fled to Scotland with Governor Dunmore. In Scotland, Randolph continued to promote reconciliation between Great Britain and the colonies.
Bray (Irish:Bré, meaning "hill", formerly Brí Chualann) is a town in north County Wicklow, Ireland. It is a busy urban centre and seaside resort, with a population of 31,872 making it the ninth largest urban area in Ireland at the 2011 census. It is situated about 20km (12mi) south of Dublin on the east coast. The town straddles the Dublin-Wicklow border, with a portion of the northern suburbs situated in County Dublin.
Bray's scenic location and proximity to Dublin make it a popular destination for tourists and day-trippers from the capital. Bray is home to Ireland's only film studios, Ardmore Studios, hosting Irish and international productions for film, television and advertising. Some light industry is located in the town, with business and retail parks concentrated largely on its southern periphery. Bray town centre has a range of shops serving the consumer needs of the surrounding area. Commuter links between Bray and Dublin are provided by rail, Dublin Bus and the M11 and M50 motorways.
Brayden Gurnari (born October 17, 1972), known by his stage name, Bray, is an American musician and singer-songwriter, whose music incorporates rock, pop, and electro funk.
His second album, Pins and Needles, was released in 2007. Two songs from the album, "Cocoon" and "Piece o' Cake", were used in the reality-television series Bad Girls Club.
In 2008, Bray released the album Live in Germany, recorded at a concert in Schmölln, Germany.
This Col. Heeza Liar cartoon is an example for animation film serving as anti-german, or rather, anti-war propaganda, clearly prior to US entry into the war. The Heeza Liar series ran from late 1913 to mid 1917, and again from late 1922 until the end of 1924. (During this period about 59 films were produced; 39 of these in the teens. Less than half of the episodes are known to have survived (current count is 24). )
11 episodes of the series explicitly are referenced to the Great War, all produced in 1915, probably animated by Bray himself. Col. Heeza Liar -– (in French named Mentoultant, which signifies: “lies all the time”) - is war correspondent for a newspaper aptly named the Daily Bluff.

The Bray Story
Here is a brief overview of animation pioneer, John Randolph Bray, who along with Earl Hurd held patents on the cel technique for 17 years. The celluloid overlay technique simplified the combinations of animated character working with a static background. Previously, as in the early Winsor McCay films HOW A MOSQUITO OPERATES and GERTIE THE DINOSAUR, the background had to be retraced with every animation drawing. The cel overlay also allowed for tone illustrated backgrounds to be used with painted-in characters to create a tonal effect. This process was adopted by all animation studios in the sound era because the old method of inking on white paper became obsolete as the tonal approach became more attractive.

Fake Gertie the Dinosaur - John Randolf Bray (1915)
Found in the film archive collection of the Montclair Public Library in Montclair, New Jersey, this 16mm print of Gertie the Dinosaur, released by Blackhawk films circa 1970, appears to be the rare plagiarized version perpetrated by animator John Randolf Bray in 1915, a year or so after the original Gertie the Dinosaur was created by animation pioneer, Winsor McCay.
This is an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Gertie the Dinosaur:
"A fake version of Gertie the Dinosaur appeared a year or two after the original; it features a dinosaur performing most of Gertie's tricks, but with less skillful animation, using cels on a static background. It is not known for certain who produced the film, though its style is believed to be that of Bray Productions."
