The Gormenghast Trilogy | A limited edition from The Folio Society
A crumbling castle the size of a city. A menagerie of sinister eccentrics. A labyrinth of ritual, mystery and conspiracy. This is the world of Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast, three masterpieces of the fantastic – Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950) and Titus Alone (1959) – collected by Folio in an edition as unprecedented as the books themselves.
A new and innovative vision of these classic works, this monumental box-set collection is truly worthy of one of the wildest imaginations in literature. From the back of a van to the London Stock Exchange
A grey day in 1974. Three '70s nerds have sunk everything they have into their dream. They've been living out the back of a van for a few months now along with all the stock they've managed to scrape together with their final few pennies.
They can't afford to pay rent. They're living off canned food and takeaways. They joined a squash club, just so they could get showered (and got rather good at squash along the way). But they do have a van. And more importantly a proper shop, as opposed to the small room at the back of an estate agents they had been working out of. And the shop is complete with till, signage and stock-filled shelves. And they're about to open up for the first time.
But will they get any customers?
Ian Livingstone, Steve Jackson and John Peake were those '70s nerds. They had no idea whether anyone would turn up at all but when they opened that door on the first day they found...
... a massive queue that went around the block! The rest is history...
And that's what this book is about. A history of Games Workshop, not just the business narrative but the story of its founders and their journey, along with all the people they picked up along the way.
Where did Ian and Steve begin? How did they get to that first Workshop store? What's the story behind Dungeons and Dragons coming to the UK, starting a whole new hobby? How did Games Workshop grow after that? It's now so big that it spans the globe. And along the way they invented an entirely new book publishing genre, too!

An author, poet, playwright and artist, Peake wrote with a painter’s eye, his peculiar flair for life and colour perfectly captured in brand-new illustrations by World Fantasy Award-winning artist and designer Dave McKean.
This landmark edition also comes with an exclusive original art print and is introduced by Neil Gaiman, another master of the modern fantastic. Limited to 750 hand-numbered sets, each collection has been personally signed by Gaiman and McKean on a beautifully illustrated limitation label.
