John Olsen was born in Newcastle on 21 January 1928 and moved to Bondi Beach with his family in 1935, which began his lifelong fascination with Sydney Harbour. He attended St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill leaving in 1943. He went to the Datillo Rubbo Art School in 1947 and in 1950 to 1953; he studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney, and Auburn School, 1950 to 1956. In 1957 a Sydney art critic raised funds for John Olsen to go to England and paint. He studied printmaking in Paris in 1957, followed by two years in Spain. Olsen returned to Sydney in 1960. He wanted to represent Australian culture in such a way that the world would see the diversity in the changing outback seasons.
In 1968 Olsen set up and ran the Bakery Art School, and in 1972-73 he painted 'Salute to Five Bells', inspired by Kenneth Slessor's poem. Olsen's work has been marked by a deep engagement with the Australian landscape, and he has lived for long periods in different parts of the country and travelled widely in it. He has served on the boards of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Art Gallery.
John Olsen (12 August 1888 – 9 December 1959) was a Danish film producer, screenwriter and theater owner. Olsen founded the Saga Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark where he produced more than 30 films from 1941 to 1959, including the Danish Culture Canon film Soldaten og Jenny. He wrote 24 films between 1936 and 1960. In 1941, Olsen built and operated one of Scandinavia's largest movie theaters, the 1513-seat Saga Teatret in Copenhagen.
Early life
Friedjohn Fulton Olsen was born in Copenhagen, the second youngest son of manufacturer Frederik Ferdinand Olsen, who ran a small business of collecting rags and bones for further processing. He attended Vestre Borgerdydsskole where he earned a primary diploma, and then moved to Germany for a merchant apprenticeship.
Career
In 1910, Olsen began work for the Moving Picture Agency in London, working variously as a developer, cinematographer, distributor and company representative. After 3 years, he opened his own distribution company in London for the sale of films to Scandinavia. In 1915 he returned to Denmark and renamed the business Overseas Film Trading Company. While spending much of the year traveling to Hollywood, Olsen secured the distribution rights for the films of Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith as well as the received the films at First National and Warner Bros.

Biography
Born in Roskilde, Olsen was first trained at the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Mogens Bøggild and Holger Jensen (1960–65). Inspired by nature, Olsen's works often emphasize details which would normally be overlooked but which he transforms into objects of beauty. His graphic works include studies of rocks or flocks of birds in Iceland or the Faroe Islands. His paintings often address birds or snowy landscapes. Olsen also draws on nature for his raw materials, making use of branches, animal skulls or stuffed birds. His creations depict nature's decay, evoking the fragility of life and the imminence of death while giving death itself beauty in its own right.
At the 1995 Venice Biennale, Olsen exhibited Resonans, a large sculpture inspired by an armadillo shell, as well as many other items based on his favourite subjects and materials. Other works from the mid-1990s include drawings he created in the sauna where charcoal and chalk interact with sweat and steam, resulting in the reddish-brown works known as Svedetegninger (Sweat Drawings).
