McCrae was born in McCrae House in Guelph, Ontario to Lieutenant-Colonel David McCrae and Janet Simpson Eckford; he was the grandson of Scottish immigrants. His brother, Dr. Thomas McCrae, became professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore and close associate of Sir William Osler. His sister, Geills married a lawyer, Kilgour, and moved to Winnipeg.
He attended the Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute. He was eventually promoted to Captain and commanded the company. He took a year off his studies at the university due to recurring problems with asthma.
Among his papers in the John McCrae House in Guelph is a letter he wrote on July 18, 1893 to Laura Kains while he trained as an artilleryman at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. "I have a manservant .. Quite a nobby place it is, in fact .. My windows look right out across the bay, and are just near the water’s edge; there is a good deal of shipping at present in the port; and the river looks very pretty."
"In Flanders Field the poppies bow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below"
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row."
"Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from falling hands we throw."
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place, and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard among the guns below."
"We shall not sleep, though poppies grow: In Flanders fields."

Lyrics:
On the banks of the Missouri
Annie Washed up in the clay
And they took her to her father
Told him it was John McCrae
Now I'm running through the badlands
Covering my tracks
Northward toward Dakota
With the devil on my back
Chorus:
Oh, the river flows
To our immortal home
Oh Annie, oh my soul
Well I took her down by the stream side
For to make that girl my bride
But in the fold of her pretty white dress
Lay her father's bowie knife
Well she pulled that steel blade on me
Told me she would take my life
So I pushed her into the river
She went under with tide
Chorus
Well the hound dogs they overtook me
40 miles past Hqarding town
and I told that young Douglas sherriff,

John McCrae's War: In Flanders Fields
This feature documentary profiles poet John McCrae, from his childhood in Ontario to his years in medicine at McGill University and the WWI battlefields of Belgium, where he cared for wounded soldiers. John McCrae—doctor, gunner and poet—was shaken by the battlefield death of a friend in May 1915, and wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields” in tribute. The poem took on a life of its own, and remains today a renowned symbol of remembrance. As a surgeon, McCrae also saved the lives of countless Canadian soldiers, wounded in the fierce battles on the muddy, cratered fields of Belgium’s Flanders region.
This tribute paid to Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae highlights some of the many facets of the man whose famous poem, “In Flanders Fields.” With our newest edition of Canada’s Ultimate Story, we offer our readers the the opportunity to explore McCrae and his life, work and legacy.

John McCrae site at Essex Farm, Ieper, Belgium
The Canadian John McCrae wrote the famous World War One poem, 'In Flanders Fields' whilst serving on the Western Front in 1914-18.
This video starts in the Essex Farm Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery on the northern edge of Ieper, Belgium. Close by is the medical bunker where McCrae was stationed and is now a site dedicated to his memory.
One of the most poignant graves I saw in my travels of the Somme & Ieper areas was that for Rifleman VJ Strudwick (The Rifle Brigade) who died on 14th January 1916 aged just 15. The family inscription on his grave says, 'Not Gone From Memoray or From Love'
The video continues throught the medical bunker area and to the satrt of the 'Flanders Fields' behind.
