John MacLeod (basketball)

John Matthew MacLeod (born October 3, 1937) is an American former basketball coach in the NCAA and the National Basketball Association.

Career

He first started coaching for the Oklahoma Sooners' basketball team. He has coached three different NBA teams; from 1973 through 1987, he coached the Phoenix Suns. This head coaching stint is considered one of the longest in the NBA. He also ended up coaching the Western Conference All-Star team in the 1981 NBA All-Star Game. The next year, he was hired by the Dallas Mavericks as head coach, a position he held for a bit over two years. In addition, he coached the New York Knicks for part of the 1990-1991 season. After he was fired from the Knicks, he coached the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1991 to 1999. He has also been an assistant head coach for the Suns during Scott Skiles' first season as head coach before officially retiring from coaching.

MacLeod had considerable success with Phoenix, but his teams did not win it all in the playoffs - they lost once in the NBA Finals, and twice at the Western Conference level. Due to the success that he had as their longest tenured head coach with 579 wins for the Suns, MacLeod was inducted into the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor on April 18, 2012 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

John MacLeod (clan chief)

John MacLeod (Scottish Gaelic: Iain MacLeòid) was chieftain of the island of Lewis in the 1520s and 1530s. He is mentioned in 1528.

John was the son of Torquil MacLeod, the deposed chief of Clan MacLeod of Lewis, whom the king had forfeited in 1506. John's uncle Malcolm had managed to acquire the ancestral island back. Malcolm's death and the minority of his son Rory, enabled John to seize the entire island of Lewes and its dominions. John was the chief ally of Domhnall 'gruamach', laird of Sleat. They warred against the MacLeods of Harris and Dunvegan. Together they managed to expel the MacLeods from Trotternish, and to prevented them from taking possession of Sleat and North Uist.

John's daughter and heiress married Domhnall 'gorme' of Sleat, the son and successor of Domhnall 'gruamach'.

John Macleod (sometimes spelled McLeod) is a Canadian-born English songwriter and musician.

Career

He moved to Britain in the 1940s, and lived in the Halifax area with his wife before moving to Brighton. In the 1950s, he was a member of the vocal group the Maple Leaf Four, with his brother, baritone Norman, Alan Harvey as tenor and Joe Melia (stagename Joe Ross) as second tenor. The group made regular appearances on British TV, and released at least two albums, Home on the Range and Old Familiar Favourites.

By the early 1960s, Macleod worked on writing advertising jingles. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Macleod co-wrote songs with Tony Macaulay. They had major success with The Foundations, when they recorded "Baby Now That I've Found You", and it topped the UK Singles Chart in November 1967. This was followed by Long John Baldry's "Let the Heartaches Begin",Paper Dolls' "Something Here in My Heart (Keeps A-Tellin' Me No)" and Pickettywitch's "That Same Old Feeling".
