Richard John Sinclair Laws, CBE (born 8 August 1935), an Australian radio presenter, sometimes known as Lawsie, was from the 1970s until his retirement in 2007, the host of a hugely successful morning radio program, which mixed music with interviews, opinion, live advertising readings and listener talkback. His distinctive voice earned him the nickname the Golden Tonsils.
Despite retiring in 2007, Laws' management confirmed in November 2010 that he would be returning to radio in February 2011, as the host of a morning programme on 2SM and the Super Radio Network.
Career
Laws' radio show was syndicated throughout Australia for many years and was consistently one of the most popular and influential programs in the Australian media. Laws is also a familiar voice for generations of Australians through his large and varied body of work as a voice-over artist for commercials, and as a celebrity endorser of commercial products, notably Valvolinemotor oil, with his popular catchphrase "Valvoline, you know what I mean" and Oral-B toothbrushes (the slogan "Oral-B, the toothbrush more dentists use.")
He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1970, and appointed a Bencher in 1985. He was appointed First Junior Treasury Counsel (Common Law) in 1984, and a Recorder in 1985, holding both positions until his appointment to the High Court in 1992.
Thoburn v Sunderland City Council 2002 - Perhaps Sir John's most famous decision, and extremely controversial in the public law sphere. In it he recognises principles in common law contrary to parliamentary sovereignty. The foundation of his decision was on four propositions:
"Yeah, well I feel sad for him if . . . I just hope . . . he's an old friend. I just hope he's OK."
"Yeah, well I feel sad for him . . . I just hope he's OK."
"We are sure that there is going to be a ton of work to do. And we expect that all the contractors, including us, are going to be a part of that process, ... We were looking for people before the storm who had the skills needed to do what we do. We definitely have an interest in someone who's qualified. I think (the approach) is very effective."
"And the story that we published today was only showing that what happened at that function was not an isolated incident, as Mr Brogden suggested, and the fact that he had chosen to stay on as the member for Pittwater, and was also entertaining suggestions that he might be able to make a comeback as a minister or a shadow minister somewhere down the track, means that he is still in public life."
"There is not a case at present for cutting the petrol excise,"
"If you have some information that would identify a potential terrorist act, people's lives could depend on you passing this information on,"
"You develop a tough old skin when you work at 60 Minutes . ? I know Lawsy, like him, been on the turps with him. I have absolutely no feeling of rivalry or animosity. Lawsy takes the city to the country and I'm pretty much the country talking to itself."
Craig Bennett sat down with radio legend John Laws to find out the life in front and behind the golden mic.
