John Joseph† (15 November 1932 – 6 May 1998) was the Roman CatholicBishop of Faisalabad from 1984–1998 and was best known for committing suicide to protest the cruel treatment of Christians by Pakistani Muslims.
He received his religious education at the Christ the King Seminary in Karachi and was ordained in Faisalabad on 18 January 1960. After completing a doctorate he went on to serve on the faculty of the Christ the King Seminary. On 24 October 1980 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Faisalabad and ordained Bishop on 9 January 1981. On 9 January 1984 he became Bishop of Faisalabad. He committed suicide by shooting himself on 6 May 1998, in protest of the execution of a Christian man on trumped up blasphemy charges by Muslims in Pakistan.
After death
Three new publications on Bishop John Joseph have been published since the bishop's death. "A Peaceful Struggle" is a compilation of the bishop's writings on matters related to justice and peace. The 197-page book was compiled by the Faisalabad diocesan human rights office, led by Father Khalid Rashid Asi. A translation of the English-language book into Urdu has also been published.
The third book, "Sermons in Blood," is a 110-page book written by labor activist Gulzar Wafa Chaudhry. Chaudhry attempts to keep alive the revolutionary spirit that Bishop Joseph tried to initiate in protest at the situation of Christians and other religious minority communities in Pakistan.
John Joseph McGowan (born October 3, 1962) is a punk rock singer from New York City, most famous for his work with the Cro-Mags in the 1980s.
Joseph was raised in foster care and grew up on the streets of New York. He was the lead singer for the New Yorkhardcore punk band Cro-Mags from 1984 until 1987, though he departed and rejoined the band sporadically. He sang on their demo and on their first, third, and fourth albums (The Age of Quarrel, Alpha Omega, and Near Death Experience). He also sings lead on the Before the Quarrel CD, essentially a reissue of the demo.
Before, during, and after his time in the Cro-Mags, Joseph served as an occasional roadie for Bad Brains on several tours, and he sang background vocals on Antidote's Thou Shalt Not Kill EP. He returned to the Cro-Mags briefly in the early to mid-1990s, but ongoing disputes with fellow band member Harley Flanagan made the project unsustainable.
Joseph sometimes goes by the nickname Bloodclot, as when performing with his band of the same name (styled with an exclamation point). He has also sung for the bands Mode of Ignorance, Both Worlds, and Fearless Vampire Killers. His autobiography, The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon, published in 2007, details the major events in his life, including his extensive involvement with the Hare Krishnas, as well his experiences with the Cro-Mags.
The son of refugees from the Assyrian Genocide in pre-IranPersia, Joseph attended the American School for Boys in Baghdad. Pennsylvania missionary Calvin Staudt who, with his wife Ida, founded the school, occasionally sent students to his alma mater, F&M. Joseph arrived in 1946, received his degree from F&M in 1950, and subsequently earned a Ph.D from Princeton University. In his long teaching career at F&M, he inspired many students, including business executive Andrew Schindler, class of '72, who contributed the leading sum for the construction of the Joseph International Center at F&M, dedicated to the study of the world's languages, culture, history and politics. Following his retirement from full-time teaching, Joseph has held the title of Lewis Audenreid Professor Emeritus of History.
John Joseph talks about rioting on the set of Saturday Night Live when Fear played in 1981.

The Vegan Ironman Diet of Cro-Mags’ John Joseph
John Joseph is a very well-known figure in both the hardcore punk and vegan communities. As lead singer of legendary New York hardcore band Cro-Mags, he's used his status and platform to spread the word about the benefits of plant-based diets and PMA (positive mental attitude).
What not a lot of people know about John is that on top of being an active touring musician and author, he also competes in the Ironman triathlons. These brutal tests of endurance consist of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. To say a lot of training and diet go into competing and finishing an Ironman would be an understatement.
We follow John as he prepares for an event in Boulder, CO to see what fuels a plant-based endurance athlete under such intense training.

The album was mostly written by Flanagan and Mayhew, with Lyrics by Flanagan, Casanova and McGowan, some songs based on a four track demo that Flanagan had recorded solo in 1982 while on the West Coast. Jayson and Joseph parted ways with the band after The Age of Quarrel, at which time Flanagan played bass and vocals on the following Cro-Mags release, Best Wishes (1989), which had a more heavy metal-influenced sound. The next record was released in 1992 Alpha Omega saw the return of Joseph singing with Flanagan. Cro-Mags disbanded but later recorded the album with the return of Doug Holland and a new rhythm guitarist, Gabby Abularach. The album, Near Death Experience was released in 1993, after which the group disbanded for several years. They began touring again in the late 1990s with Flanagan on vocals and bass and Mayhew returning to guitar. In 2000 the band released Revenge. The release of Revenge and its subsequent tour resulted in Mayhew leaving the band for the last time. In 2001 Flanagan asked Joseph to join him once again, but the short-lived reunion ended in 2002.
