Hogg joined the ALP in 1976 and became an active member in the organization, attending the Queensland State Conference as a delegate in 1981 and the National Conference in 1984. He became a member of the ALP's Administrative Committee in 1982 and eventually a representative on the National Executive. He continued to rise within the party, eventually becoming the Chair of the ALP National Policy Committee (Government Administration) in 1991. He was preselected as first candidate on the ALP ticket for the Queensland Senate to replace retiring Gerry Jones in 1996. A member of the Labor Right faction, he defeated the Socialist Left candidate Jeff Slowgrove 76 to 72. He was elected and took office as Senator on 1 July 1996. In August 2002 Hogg was elected Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of Committees. After the ALP won government in 2007, Hogg was elected to replace Alan Ferguson as President of the Senate.
Hogg made his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire against a combined Yorkshire and Durham team in 1858 at Portrack Lane, Stockton-on-Tees. He made two further first-class appearances for Nottinghamshire, both against Surrey at The Oval in 1859 and 1861. He later made two first-class appearances for the North in two North v South fixtures in 1861 at Lord's and The Oval. In his five first-class matches, Hogg scored 78 runs at an average of 13.00, with a high score of 31. Behind the stumps he took two catches and made four stumpings.
He died at Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire on 30 October 1885.
John Hogg (1800–1869) was a British naturalist who wrote about amphibians, birds, plants, reptiles, and protists. In 1839 he became a member of the Royal Society.
John Hogg is credited with the creation of a fourth kingdom, accompanying Lapides, Plantae and Animalia, to classify Life. In 1860 he named the kingdom Regnum Primigenum or Protoctista.
His rationale was simply that a kingdom of 'first beings' was necessary as these entities were believed to have existed prior to plants and animals.
In 1735, two living supergroups were formalized by Carl von Linné in his monumental Systema Naturae. All organisms were placed into the Kingdoms Plantae and Animalia. Linné added a third kingdom of the natural world in 1766; Lapides or ‘rocks’. These were deemed to be similar to plants in that they were, neither living nor ‘sentient’, i.e. not having ‘senses’. They were further characterised as solid bodied.
Hogg attempted to justify his arguments for a fourth kingdom with Spongilla, a freshwater green sponge, that was an animal known to exude oxygen in the light. However, the photosynthesis was later shown to be a result of symbiotic 'algae'.
The Dryburne Martyrs, Richard Hill, Richard Holiday, John Hogg and Edmund Duke (all died 27 May 1590) were English Roman Catholic priests and martyrs, executed at Dryburne, County Durham, in the reign of Elizabeth I.
Not much is known of their early lives. Duke was born in Kent in 1563. The other three came from Yorkshire (Hogg from Cleveland) but their dates of birth are unknown. They all arrived in the mid-1580s at the English College at Rheims to study for the priesthood.
Duke arrived on 3 March 1583 and was ordained to minor orders there on 23 September 1583. He was subsequently was sent to Rome and entered the English College there on 22 August 1584. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Lateran Basilica on 3 September 1589. Leaving the city for England, he set out on 15 September and on 15 October reached Rheims.
Holiday arrived at Rheims on 6 September 1584, Hill on 15 May 1587, and Hogg on 15 October 1587. The three were together ordained subdeacons at Soissons on 18 March 1589, by Bishop Jérôme Hennequin, deacons 27 May and priests 23 September at Laon by Bishop Valentine Douglas, O.S.B..
He made his debut for the "Saints" on 7 October 1905, in a 2–1 victory at home to Watford. Although he was often played at centre-half, he was more at home at right-half; he was primarily a "destructive" rather than "constructive" player who "appeared to be rather slow (although) he had an easy stride" and was "reliable and a great trier" but "tended to be over-awed in important matches". For the 1905–06 season, he became a regular in defence alongside England internationals Bert Lee and Kelly Houlker. In his first season at The Dell, Hogg made 24 league and 5 FA Cup appearances, scoring once, as Southampton finished as runners-up in the League.
