John Healy is a British writer and former tournament chess player.
He was born in London in 1942 to Irish immigrant parents in London's Kentish Town. Leaving school at the age of 14, he spent his formative years in the army, where he had a successful boxing career. Dishonourably discharged for drunkenness and going absent without leave, Healy began a downward spiral that brought him into the subculture of London's homeless street drinkers. He spent fifteen years as a homeless alcoholic and was convicted of many petty crimes during this time.
Chess
During one of his prison stretches he learned the game of chess from a fellow cellmate, Harry 'the Fox'. Finding that he had a special aptitude for the game, he decided to give up drinking and with the help of his Probation Officer, Clive Soley (now Clive Soley, Baron Soley), he made his first moves back into normal life. He has remained sober since.
His chess career continued for ten years and despite the ravages of his years spent on the streets he became a highly rated player, capable of conducting several games concurrently.
Healy was a journalist with The Irish Times newspaper, writing the Backbencher column in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a close friend of the editor, Douglas Gageby.
Healy's book No One Shouted Stop (The Death of an Irish Town), published in 1968, chronicled the economic and social decline of rural life in the west of Ireland in a time of widespread poverty and mass emigration. He also wrote Nineteen Acres on the history and lifestyle of his family, who were small farmers.
Healy was a strong Fianna Fáil supporter and one of the most fervent journalistic supporters and admirers of
both Donagh O'Malley and Charles Haughey. Healy's support for
the latter caused considerable controversy among his fellow Irish Times journalists,
many of whom were outspoken opponents of Haughey.
Death and afterward
John Healy died January 6, 1991 and was survived by his wife, Evelyn.

The Image: The final frame where John Healy stares at us is very uncomfortable - he looks like a ghost almost, even the curved shape of his body... doesn't he look like a ghost caught on camera?
I cannot begin to to tell you how much I Love this image and how much I respect this man - John Healy.

Barbaric Genius Trailer
In the early '90s, writer John Healy was everywhere -- on TV, in the papers, being interviewed, reviewed, profiled. He had many qualities that made him appealing to the media, but the most attractive one was a sense of danger. As well as being an award-winning author and the subject of an award-winning feature film, John Healy had a history of violence.
First he was a street wino, battling for survival in a world of psychopaths, then a tournament chess player, turning his extraordinary talent into a means of escape from the gutter, and then he wrote his life story, The Grass Arena.
But success didn't last. After a dispute with his publishers made the front pages in 1991, his work was taken out of print suddenly and remained unavailable for many years.
Now, after 16 years, he's making a...

A complex, fascinating and obvious genius (yet highly irascible by all accounts - with good reason it seems) - go read the book.

Now, after 16 years, he's making a comeback, launched once more on the world stage, with the likes of Irvine Welsh and Daniel Day-Lewis as his cheerleaders. His book, The Grass Arena, out of print since 1991, is selling well, with a new foreword by Day-Lewis.
Barbaric Genius chronicles one man's journey from violent oblivion, through redemption and acceptance, then back to where he started out. It tells a story about what it's like to be London-Irish, freakishly talented but cursed with an inability to escape your circumstances.
