He was also a Fellow of both the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries. When his brother John died in 1823, Francis inherited the earldom and family fortune.
Egerton spent much of his later life living in Paris. According to the Parisian police, Egerton kept dogs and cats in his house, which actually a lavish hotel he purchased. He would dress the dogs and cats as ladies and gentlemen every evening for dinner. Their feet were equipped with leather boots and linen napkins were placed around their necks. Their meals were served on silver dishes.
Once, when two of his dogs did not obey him, he wrote, “The blackguards have deceived me…I have treated them like gentlemen and they have behaved like rascals. Take their measure, they shall wear for eight days the yellow coats and knee breeches of my valets and shall stay in the ante-room and be deprived of the honour of seeing me for a week”.
Each day Egerton wore a new pair of shoes and he arranged the worn shoes into rows, so that he could measure the passing time.
When Paris was redesigned to meet the Napoleon’s vision, many streets were altered. However, when Napoleon’s men arrived near the Hotel Egerton with the intention of making changes, Egerton sent them away. Later, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg attempted to requisition the Hotel Egerton. He was met by Egerton himself surrounded by 30 of his servants, all armed and ready to resist. Luckily, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg stood down.
Egerton was a also Freemason who had been initiated in France, and from 1786 until 1800 Egerton was Provincial Grand Master for Shropshire and North Wales.
He never married and had no known children. However, it should be noted that some of his friends believe the impending birth of an illegitimate child in England cause Egerton to flee to Paris.
The earldom became extinct upon his death in 1829. Egerton is buried at Little Gaddesden near the family seat of Ashridge House.

Worsley Delph, located in the village of Worsley, Greater Manchester, has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. It was originally a coal mine, playing a vital role in the Industrial Revolution. The abundance of coal in the area made it an ideal location for mining operations.
Francis Egerton, a visionary and innovator, recognised the potential of the coal mines in Worsley. In the late 18th century, he devised a ground-breaking transportation system known
as the Bridgewater Canal. This canal connected Worsley Delph to Manchester, facilitating the efficient transport of coal and other goods.
There is a darker side the history of the Worsley Delph. Working in the mine, were children as young as four. Life was tough and very harsh. See the section about child workers at 10:09. It's a stark reminder of just how hard life was if you were poor.
Under the guidance of Francis Egerton, the Bridgewater Canal was constructed between 1759 and 1761. The canal revolutionised transportation in the region, providing a cost-effective and reliable means of moving goods. It played a crucial role in the growth of the coal industry in Worsley Delph and beyond.
The development of the Bridgewater Canal spurred significant industrial growth in Worsley Delph and its surroundings. Mills, factories, and other industries flourished, transforming the area into a bustling centre of economic activity.
In recent years, there have been extensive restoration efforts to preserve the historical significance of Worsley Delph.
