John Coates (29 June 1865 – 16 August 1941) was a leading English tenor, who sang in opera and oratorio and on the concert platform. His repertoire ranged from Bach and Purcell to contemporary works, and embraced the major heldentenor roles in Richard Wagner's operas. For more than 40 years, with only a four-year interruption for military service during World War I, he overcame the limitations of a voice that was not naturally large by impressing listeners with his intense artistic expression, lively diction, musical versatility and memorable stage presence.
Coates spent some time on the European continent, toured Australia and South Africa in 1912–13 and performed in North America in the 1890s and again in 1925. He performed most often, however, in his native country and became a beloved figure at England's regional music festivals. Elgar'sDream of Gerontius was one of his specialties. After 1921, he limited his performances to the concert stage and recitals, still performing a wide-ranging repertoire, but championing English composers. A dispute with music publishers about royalties clouded his later years.
John Coates (born January 1970), is an English businessman and current Joint Chief Executive of online gambling company Bet365. He has been listed in the Forbes magazine’s 29th annual rich list, with an estimated personal fortune of $1.3 billion (roughly £850 million).

Coates announced his resignation from the Senate on the same day that his ALP colleague Senator Mal Colston left the party and with Coalition support was elected Deputy President of the Senate. Senator Coates announced his resignation in the Senate just shortly after Colston's election as Deputy Senate President and when Senator Coates made this announcement there was an interjection from across the chamber from Liberal Senator Alan Ferguson.
In reference to the Colston defection earlier in the day, Senator Ferguson in response to Senator Coates' announcement said "Another one." Whilst still in the middle of making his resignation speech, Senator Coates responded in kind by saying, "From the Senate not from the Australian Labor Party."
Dr John Coates on the hormonal responses that lead city traders to make financial risks
There's a tendency in economics to think that financial risk-taking is a purely cognitive activity, but as Dr John Coates explains, it's more quirky than that. Young male city traders on a winning streak shift their risk preferences and take on too much risk. When they lose money in a volatile market, their hormonal response drives the financial community to being risk averse. Dr John Coates explains "We've been trying to identify the molecules and nervous pathways in the body that contribute to this transformation, that would account for shifts in risk preferences which we think destabilise the financial markets."

Some even called for the resignation of the Australian Olympic Committee President, over his comments to the Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk
John Coates was being criticized for lecturing Palaszczuk and ordering her to attend the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Palaszczuk had previously said she would not attend the ceremony, amid growing domestic concern about her international trip
She has been one of the premiers to support a major cut to the travel caps that prevented Australians stranded abroad from returning during Covid-19 pandemic
A petition that called on the federal government to deny Palaszczuk a travel exemption also garnered 120,000 signatures
But, the Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee, Coates issued a stern rebuke with Palaszczuk sitting next to him at a press conference
John Coates is a major powerbroker in the world of international sport and is considered the second most powerful member of the IOC movement, behind only the IOC President, Thomas Bach. Apart from this, John Coates has a history of corruption as head of the Olympic committee.
Critics said his additional layer of power made Australia’s win possible. Coates also helped secure Australia’s second Olympics in Sydney two decades ago
The Tokyo incident is not the first time the 71-year-old has courted controversy. In 2017, he refused to shake hands with the then-chair of the Australian Sports Commission John Wylie, when he was fighting off a challenge to his AOC presidency for the first time in 27 years against Hockeyroos gold medallist Danielle Roche
Coates had triumphed but promised to retire in 2022. However, he is expected to remain involved in the 2032 organising committee in his retirement.
