John Henry "Jack" "Doc" Bradley (July 10, 1923 – January 11, 1994) was a United States NavyHospital corpsman who was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in combat while attached to a U.S. Marine Corps rifle company on February 21, 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Bradley was the last surviving member of the second of two American flag-raisings that took place on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945.
Early years
Born John Henry Bradley in Antigo, Wisconsin to James ("Cabbage") and Kathryn Bradley, he was the second of five children. He grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, and reportedly had an interest in entering the funeral business from an early age, He completed an apprenticeship with a local funeral director before he entered military service.
World War II
U.S. Navy
Bradley enlisted the U.S. Navy at 19, when his father suggested it as a way to avoid ground combat. Following his completion of Navy boot camp, he was considered to be qualified to attend one of the navy's hospital corpsman schools in March 1943. On its completion, he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland. He was then transferred to the Department of the Navy's Fleet Marine Force and assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps and sent to one of the "field medical service schools" at a nearby Marine Corps base. Successfully completing the course which included Marine training, he was sent to the 5th Marine Division, a newly activated infantry division which was then being formed at Camp Pendleton, California where he was attached as a combat corpsman to Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment.
Bradley served with the East Yorkshire Regiment and then the Machine Gun Corps during the First World War, transferring to the Royal Air Force in August 1918. He was appointed Officer CommandingNo. 14 Squadron in 1921 and Station Commander at RAF Northolt in 1930. Promoted to group captain in July 1931, Bradley went on to be Senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters Wessex Bombing Area in November 1931, Director of Equipment at the Air Ministry in 1935, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief RAF Maintenance Command in 1938. He continued in that role during the Second World War, though he moved on to be Deputy Air Member for Supply & Organisation in 1942 before retiring at the end of the war.
Bradley is an English surname derived from a place name meaning "broad wood" or "broad clearing" in Old English.
Like many English surnames Bradley can also be used as a given name and as such has become popular.
It is also an Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic name O’Brolachán (also O’Brallaghan) from County Tyrone in Ireland. The family moved and spread to counties Londonderry, Donegal and Cork, and England.
Surname
Bradley is the surname of the following notable people:
A. C. Bradley (Andrew Cecil Bradley, 1851–1935), English Shakespearean scholar
Abraham Bradley, Jr. (1767–1838), first Assistant Postmaster-General of the U.S.
The Bradley was an automobile manufactured in Cicero, Illinois, USA, by the Bradley Motor Car Company. Production commenced in 1920 with the Model H tourer, which was powered by a 4 cylinderLycoming engine, had a 116-inch wheelbase, and a selling price of $1295.
In 1921 the Model H continued in production, but was joined by the 6 cylinder powered Model F, also available as a tourer for $1500.
In November 1920, the company went into involuntary receivership, with liabilities of approximately $100,000. Although the assets held by the company were greater, including finished and party-assembled vehicles, along with a large inventory, the company was bankrupt by the end of 1921. Total production of the Bradley automobile was 263 cars.

Bradley sprang up during the 19th century with several factories and farms surrounded by mostly terraced houses in which the factory and farm workers lived. But almost all of Bradley had been redeveloped by the early 1970s, the majority of homes in the area were council-owned.
The Wednesbury Oak Loop of the Birmingham Canal Navigations winds round the north of the village. This was originally part of the main line of the canal between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, planned by James Brindley and built between 1768 and 1772. This map from about 1888 shows Bradley, the canal and many coal mine shafts and iron works. A separate canal, the Bradley Branch, terminated at Wednesbury Oak, to the south of Bradley.
