Born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where his carpenter and bricklayer father Hugh had moved after service in the War of 1812, Bingham attended local public schools. After his mother's death in 1827, his father remarried. John moved west to Ohio to live with his merchant uncle Thomas after clashing with his new stepmother. The teenager apprenticed as a printer for two years, helping to publish the Luminary, an anti-Masonic newspaper. He then returned to Pennsylvania to study at Mercer College, after which Bingham studied law at Franklin College in New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. There, Bingham befriended former slave Titus Basfield, who became the first African American to graduate college in Ohio, and with whom he continued to correspond for many years.
John Michael Ward Bingham, 7th Baron Clanmorris (3 November 1908 – 6 August 1988) was a former MI5 spy and an English novelist who published 17 thrillers, detective novels and spy novels.
Background
During the Second World War and for two decades after 1950, Bingham worked for MI5 and was reportedly the inspiration for John le Carre's character George Smiley. In 1999 le Carré confirmed that Bingham had been an inspiration for Smiley and in 2000 went further, writing in an introduction to a reissue of one of Bingham's novels that "He had been one of two men who had gone into the making of George Smiley. Nobody who knew John and the work he was doing could have missed the description of Smiley in my first novel". John LeCarre in a BBC Radio "Front Row" interview in 2009 said that Bingham's successful thriller novels, published when the two men worked together at MI5 in the 1950s, inspired le Carre to write his first two books.
Jack King speculation
There had been previously speculation that the spy known as Jack King was John Bingham but the release of files by MI5 in October 2014 clarifies this was not the case, and the spy was in fact Eric Roberts.
Bingham was the son of Richard Bingham, of Bingham's Melcombe, Dorset and his wife Jane Hopton, daughter of Sir Arthur Hopton. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford on 9 December 1631, aged 18. He was a student of the Middle Temple in 1632.
John Bingham (born 1948) is an Americanmarathon runner and author, nicknamed "The Penguin", who has achieved widespread recognition for promoting the walking of long-distance race courses to the general public.
Bingham is the author of several books and the No Need for Speed column in Runner's World. He believes that the goals of running are to have fun and finish—and that for a vast majority of amateur athletes running fast should not be the only aim.
His philosophies are often challenged and dismissed by runners, who feel that Bingham's "penguins" have lowered the bar for athletic achievement.
He has completed over 40 marathons and many shorter races.
In June 2014 Bingham announced that he would retire from writing and public speaking at the end of the year.

John Bingham was born in Northern Ireland around 1953 and was brought up in a Protestant family. Described as a shopkeeper, he was married with two children. He lived in Ballysillan Crescent, in the unionist estate of Ballysillan in North Belfast, and also owned a holiday caravan home in Millisle, County Down.
He was a member of the "Old Boyne Island Heroes" Lodge of the Orange Order. On an unknown date, he joined the Ulster loyalist paramilitary organisation, the UVF, and eventually became the commander of its "D Company", 1st Battalion, Ballysillan, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was the mastermind behind a productive gun-running operation from Canada, which over the years had involved the smuggling of illegal weapons into Northern Ireland to supply UVF arsenals; however, three months after Bingham's death, the entire operation collapsed following a raid on a house in Toronto by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in December 1986.

7 Worth Its Weight in Gold
Nicholas W. Arrington, a Civil War-era plantation owner descended from early British settlers, remains one of the most notorious cockfighters 150 years after his death.
The wealthy North Carolinian was known for fighting the most expensive cock matches on record, twice defeating General Santa Anna in cocking events. For one such match, he and friends-in-sport hauled more than 300 of his roosters by wagon train to meet the dictator outside El Paso. After Arrington's birds got the best of the Mexican leader's Spanish Blues at that meeting, Santa Anna purchased one of Arrington's cocks for its weight in gold, 99 ounces.
This episode explores some of Arrington's biggest wins. Along the way, we touch on topics from early American gamefowl breeders such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson a...

THE LADY THAT DEFENDED A CASTLE AGAINST A BRUTAL SIEGE!
The most important element of having a castle is defence. The primary purpose of the fortifications is to protect those inside of the castle, and to keep people outside. She owned Corfe Castle, and whilst her husband fought alongside the King she managed to hold off an incredibly brutal and long 3 year siege of Corfe Castle. It was remarkable that she managed to hold the cannon fire so long, and her defence was responsible for the deaths of around 100 enemy soldiers. The castle eventually was surrendered when she was betrayed and tricked, however the enemy were so impress with Lady Mary's defence that they allowed her to keep the keys to Corfe Castle.
