Information Leakage of Neural Networks by Johan Östman, Research Scientist @ AI Sweden
As machine learning is becoming a cornerstone of society, it increasingly encounters the challenge of handling sensitive data. This issue is magnified when trained machine learning models are shared with external entities, e.g., open-source or via API, which raises the critical question: Can sensitive information be extracted from the shared models?
In this talk, we will navigate the fascinating domain of information extraction attacks targeting trained machine learning models. We will dissect various attack vectors across different adversarial settings and their potential to compromise data. Additionally, we will discuss strategies to mitigate these attacks and showcase the effectiveness of such techniques.
Finally, we will touch upon the legal aspects and the importance in bridging between legal and technical definitions of risk.
Johan leads the privacy-preserving machine learning initiatives at AI Sweden, Sweden’s national center for applied AI. His team is dedicated to mitigating information leakage from machine learning models and advancing decentralized machine learning methodologies. He is also co-leading a research group at Chalmers University of Technology, focusing on the privacy-security-utility tension within federated learning. Additionally, he is the project initiator of a federated learning project together with Handelsbanken and Swedbank to combat money laundering. He also leads a larger initiative investigating the nuances of information leakage. Johan holds a Ph.D. in Information Theory and dual master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Industrial Economics.
Recorded at the 2024 GAIA Conference on March 27 at Svenska Mässan in Gothenburg, Sweden.

A video I made for my Ap psychology final, I really love monster, so I decided to do my project on Johan Liebert, the main antagonist of the series. I would really enjoy it if any criticisms or further thoughts/additions to what I say within the video are put in the comments below
0:00 - Introduction
0:34 - The Nameless Monster
1:00 - Johan's Crimes
1:47 - Johan diagnoses/Treatments
2:37 - Closing Statements
My script:
(Script sounds different within the actual video, I added some stuff that I didn’t script)
“Could a being with the same malice and evil as the devil exist?” If I were to be asked this question, I’d say yes. Individuals in the real world that have been seen throughout this project and history can easily fit that level of malice. But what about in fiction? I think the answer remains yes, and is best exemplified through the main antagonist of the series, “monster”, Johan Liebert.
The story of “monster” is set in Germany, it follows Kenzo Tenma, a neurosurgeon, and his pursuit to catch Johan, a serial killer who’s very existence is unknown and questioned, and has pinned Tenma on his crimes.
Johan is a man with no name. The name Johan was given to him by a member of the Czech secret service when we was found on the border, clutching a picture book titled “The nameless monster”. He was born under a eugenics experiment aiming to create a highly intelligent human who was flawless in appearance and could lead the human race. In this program he was stripped of the most basic human identity, a name.
Johan is a Czech-born german who is highly intelligent, has little to no regard for human life, lacks empathy and manipulates to get his way. Some of his crimes include, mass murder, mass corruption, suicide inducement in adults and children, and more, half of which being for his own entertainment as his main goal is erasing himself from the world, achieving the perfect suicide
Johan was definitely able to get away with his crimes due to the time period. Monster takes place in the year 1986, so things like digital cameras weren’t commercially sold for another few years, and dna testing was barely beginning to be used. If his crimes were committed in the current year, his existence would be known and he’d more than likely be imprisoned
Johan is straight up, a psychopath. I would diagnose Johan with ASPD and clinical depression. He consistently has a lack of empathy, no regard for human life, manipulates to get what he wants, and (of course) has (more like would have) run ins with the law, all of which are symptoms showcased by people with ASPD. Johan’s endgame plan, the perfect suicide, is all about killing himself and everyone who’s ever known of his existence in order for him to, in a way, have never existed, that very plan is why I have diagnosed him clinical depression.
For his depression, I would have him take an SSRI, which is a commonly used pill to help treat depression. I would also have Johan enter Cognitive behavioral therapy, as that’s the treatment most people with ASPD undergo, but within the context of the series, I don’t think any form of treatment would really help much
Conclusion: Johan is a monster, teetering on the very line of “human”. I am reluctant to even say treatment would stop him from unleashing his evil onto the world
