Schmidt grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the borough of Brentwood and attended the University of Pittsburgh, playing on the school's football team for three years, from 1950 to 1952. His hard-nosed play and leadership were an integral part of the team during those three years, with his inspirational pre-game speech helping the Panthers upset the heavily-favored Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 22–19, on October 11, 1952. One player later commented, "Hell, we were more afraid of Schmidt than Notre Dame." Schmidt's jersey No. 65 is retired and is among an impressive list of fellow Pitt players.
Despite these attributes, Schmidt's size (6ft, 195lb; 1.8 m, 88kg) worked against him in the NFL draft, when the Lions waited until the seventh round to select him. It was not until his arrival at the 1953 College All-Star Game that the Lion coaches, who were opposing him in the contest, saw his talent on display.
Josef 'Joe' Schmidt is a New Zealand-born Irish
rugby union coach, who is currently the head coach of Ireland. Ireland have won two 6 Nations Championships in two years under his leadership. Schmidt's first head coaching role in Europe was with Leinster Rugby, beginning in 2010. He brought unprecedented success to the province, reaching six finals and winning four trophies in three years. He was previously an assistant coach with the Blues and Clermont Auvergne.
Schmidt was born and grew up in New Zealand, and became an Irish citizen in 2015.
Early life
After training as a school teacher, Schmidt played rugby in New Zealand before playing amateur rugby in the Irish lower leagues during the 1990s. He then returned to New Zealand to take up the position of a head teacher.
Coaching
Schmidt took up the option to coach New Zealand Schools, before leaving teaching to coach Bay of Plenty from 2003–2004. While at the Steamers he won the Ranfurly Shield defeating Auckland on 15 August 2004. The Steamers had one successful defence of the title before losing to Canterbury. Schmidt joined the Blues as assistant coach from 2004–2007 where, in his final year, they were knocked out in the semi-final.
"Life is a shit sandwich and every day you take another bite."
"I burned what end of the candle I had to burn,"
"I'm just riding the wave until it hits the shore."
"Playing there will help them get some experience."
"keeping pressure on the ball, controlling the opponent's set plays and team defense."
"We can wear some teams down this year."
"All these things are best accomplished with their feet on the ground."
"They're both driving me crazy."
"These people were really in dire need of help, and we did our best to accommodate their needs, ... If we feel we can make a positive impact, that's where we want to be. ... And we did good."
"They're professionals. They're good. I know a lot of them. I've known some of them for over 20 years. They are going to take care of it and represent Missouri very well,"

Joe Schmidt has spoken after being announced as the new Wallabies coach by Rugby Australia.
“I thought I’d retired when I went back to New Zealand but I’m very poor at doing that,” he said during a media conference on Friday.
He said he was “pretty excited” for the “really unique challenge”.
“I can’t say that I’ll succeed or otherwise at the moment, I’m just trying to get my feet under the desk and trying to get a better measure of who’s out there and what capability they have.
“I’ve certainly observed a lot with Australian players, obviously preparing to play against them, but getting to know the people behind the player.”

Joe Schmidt brought Ireland to their highest ever ranking of World Number 1 however as a result Ireland became predictable and stale.
Despite this, Schmidt is widely respected across Ireland Rugby and is now a coach if the Nee Zealand All Blacks who narrowly missed a World Cup Final win vs South Africa in the Rugby World Cup 2023.

Joe Schmidt speaks to the media after naming his first squad as coach of the Wallabies.

What is a power play? Usually occurring off set piece, it is a series of phases where an attacking team is trying to pull a defending team into defending a particular way, so it can be exploited.
Many moves shown in these clips are as a result of previous attacking phases, making the defence believe Ireland are going to attack a certain way, hence why they score off first phase.
Joe Schmidt brought these set piece, phased attacks to Leinster and then Ireland which took Irish rugby to another prvrl goobally. Players who knew exactly where they were supposed to be, at all times, manupulating opposition to think they were defending accurately to then be exploited.

This week on Kick Offs and Kick Ons we take the show on the road. We headed down to Super Round Melbourne courtesy of TEG and had one hell of a time. On the show this week we dusted off our KOKO shirts, popped a few Nurofen and fixed our hair as we welcomed a very special guest on set, new Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt.
Smokey Joe told us how he has almost fixed Australian Rugby less than a week into the job, the Super Rugby players that have caught his eye and he shares his positive messaging for Aussie rugby fans. So let's get excited to see all Australian rugby teams "Schmidt it in" over the next couple of years.
After Joe had vacated the show to save his professional reputation, the boys recapped all the action from Super Round Melbourne took part in a Super Rugby quiz off and we share exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from our weekend down there
So sit back and gently run your fingers through your Melbourne hipster moustache and sip on your three quarter piccolo in a graffitied lane way, it's now time for The KOKO Show.

A defeat by Joe Schmidt's Wallabies would set a new national record ... Schmidt predicted a tough battle, citing Wales' 40-6 victory over an Australian team then coached by Eddie Jones at last year's Rugby World Cup.
Those odds on rugby betting sites seem like a strong reaction to the Wallabies’ last-gasp win at Twickenham, a fixture they were 12-point underdogs for after an underwhelming start to life under Joe Schmidt.
But coach Joe Schmidt still expects the 21-year-old to be a powerful, potentially game-changing option for Australia in a team he's had to tinker with more than he would have liked following their 42-37 win over England at Twickenham.
However coach Joe Schmidt is set to dump the rugby league convert to the bench for the Wallabies' next clash against Wales, instead recalling Samu Kerevi to the starting centres.
Good as it was, coach Joe Schmidt will know it wasn’t perfect ...England’s pre-game braggadocio came back to bite them last weekend and Schmidt must ensure his men don’t make the same mistake against Warren Gatland’s wounded Welsh.
"Last week's Test was fast-paced and physical and we've brought in some freshness for what's going to be another bruising encounter in Cardiff," said coach Joe Schmidt ...Australia (15-1) ... Replacements ... Coach. Joe Schmidt (NZL). lp/ea.
When asked about the breakaway league, Australia head coach Joe Schmidt admitted he didn't know anything about the plans, but expressed doubt how it would work alongside the current competitions.
But head coach Joe Schmidt has recalled the powerhouse midfielder Samu Kerevi in place of Sua’ali’i ... a breath and watch a bit of a game before entering is a great opportunity for us,’ said Schmidt.
The standard has been set in the last decade, first under Joe Schmidt and now under Andy Farrell... Their win against the Wallabies in particular was spectacular, as they inflicted a record-breaking 67-27 defeat on Joe Schmidt’s side.
Valetini will earn a 50th cap having only missed two tests since 2020 ... "Last week's Test was fast-paced and physical and we've brought in some freshness for what's going to be another bruising encounter in Cardiff," Australia coach Joe Schmidt said.
The 28-year-old switched to the Queensland Reds from league powerhouse Melbourne Storm in 2021 and earned an immediate call up to Wallabies... But he has not been picked since new Australia coach Joe Schmidt took over this year ... mp/dj. .
Wales’ next opponents are a revived Australia in Cardiff on Sunday ... Wales’ back division to take on Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies has only 63 caps of experience in total and 38 of those belong to fly-half Anscombe ... In Schmidt they have a canny head coach ... .
