James Warren "Jim" Jones (May 13, 1931– November 18, 1978) was an American cult leader. Jones was the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple, infamous due to the mass murder-suicide in November 1978 of 918 of its members in Jonestown, Guyana, the murder of Congressman Leo Ryan, and the ordering of four additional Temple member deaths in Georgetown, the Guyanese capital. Nearly three-hundred children were murdered at Jonestown, almost all of them by cyanide poisoning. Jones died from a gunshot wound to the head; it is suspected his death was a suicide.
Jones was born in Indiana and started the Temple there in the 1950s. He later moved the Temple to California in the mid-1960s, and gained notoriety with the move of the Temple's headquarters to San Francisco in the early 1970s.
Early life
Jones was born in a rural area of Crete, Indiana, to James Thurman Jones (1887–1951), a World War I veteran, and Lynetta Putnam (1902–1977). Lynetta reportedly believed she had given birth to a messiah. He was of Irish and Welsh descent. Jones later claimed partial Cherokee ancestry through his mother, though according to his maternal second cousin Barbara Shaffer, this is likely untrue. Economic difficulties during the Great Depression necessitated that Jones' family move to Lynn, Indiana, in 1934, where he grew up in a shack without plumbing.
Jones served as a legislative assistant to U.S. SenatorLen Jordan in the early 1970s. Afterwards he practiced law in Jerome and Boise.
Jones entered politics in 1978 as a candidate for Congress from the state's 2nd district. He was defeated in the Republican primary by incumbent George Hansen, and lost again in the 1980 primary to Hansen.
Jones was elected the state's attorney general as a Republican in 1982, and was re-elected unopposed in 1986. He ran for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jim McClure in 1990, but was defeated in the primary by Congressman Larry Craig, and returned to his private law practice in 1991.
Jones was signed by the Baltimore Ravens on April 28, 2001 after going undrafted in the 2001 NFL Draft. He was released by the Ravens on September 1, 2001.
Houston Texans
Jones signed with the Houston Texans on January 8, 2002. He was released by the Texans on April 23, 2002.
Baltimore Ravens/Rhein Fire
Jones was signed by the Baltimore Ravens on July 24, 2002. He released by the Ravens on August 30, 2002 and signed to the team's practice squad on October 17, 2002. He was released by the Ravens on November 19, 2002 and signed to the team's practice squad on November 27, 2002. Jones was allocated to NFL Europe on February 6, 2003 and played for the Rhein Fire during the 2003 season. He was released by the Ravens on August 31, 2003.
The town lies in the valley of the River Waveney, around a mere (lake) that covers 6 acres (2.4ha). The mere is up to 18 feet (5.5m) deep, although there is another 51 feet (16m) of mud. The town takes its name from dic an Anglo-Saxon word meaning either ditch or embankment.
At the time of Edward the Confessor, Diss was part of the Hartismere hundred (a hundred was an administrative subdivision) of Suffolk, and it was recorded as such in the Domesday book. It is recorded as being in the king's possession as demesne (direct ownership) of the Crown, there being at that time a church and a glebe of 24 acres. This was considered to be worth £15 per annum, which had doubled by the time of William the Conqueror, it being then estimated at £30 with the benefit of the whole hundred and half, belonging to it. It was then found to be a league long, around 3 miles (5km) and half this distance broad, and paid 4d. in Danegeld. From this it appears that it was still relatively small, but it grew shortly afterwards when it subsumed Watlingsete Manor, a neighbouring area, which was as large as Diss, and seemingly fuller of inhabitants, according to the geld or tax that it paid. This was afterwards called Walcote, and includes part of Heywode, as appears from its joining to Burston, into which town this manor extended.

Jim Jones - Death Tape 1978
The Jonestown Death Tape
An audio recording made on November 18, 1978, at the Peoples Temple compound in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during the mass suicide and murder of over 900 members of the cult.
Original Notes:
I acquired the source cassette tape from a schoolmate c. 1979 whose father was an FBI agent
The sound levels were increased as close as possible to clipping when I mastered to CD-R from cassette and then normalized to -18dB average RMS power (loudness) in Sound Forge
An interesting website for further research is the Jonestown Institute which contains transcripts as well as commentary on this and other recordings recovered by the FBI from Jonestown after the mass suicide and murders.

THE JONESTOWN MASSACRE 📼 | Jim Jones and the People's Temple Cult: what did the audio tapes reveal?
On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones orchestrated the Jonestown massacre, the name given to the mass murder carried out by the preacher and leader of a religious community in the heart of the Guyanese jungle.
Media outlets worldwide narrated, horrified, what the Guyanese authorities had discovered in the settlement of the long-considered dark cult. The members of the People's Temple, the cult led by Jim Jones, had just committed the largest mass suicide in modern history. 909 people were found dead.
The grim outcome for a community that, at the time when journalist Marshall Kilduff published an article exposing the dark truth about the sect based in San Francisco, was forced to embark on an exodus to what Jim Jones referred to as "The Promised Land." However, when Congressman Leo Ryan led an ...

The grim outcome for a community that, at the time when journalist Marshall Kilduff published an article exposing the dark truth about the sect based in San Francisco, was forced to embark on an exodus to what Jim Jones referred to as "The Promised Land." However, when Congressman Leo Ryan led an expedition to that place to rescue American citizens, the tragedy unfolded.
This is the story behind the People's Temple. A journey into the mind of Jim Jones to understand, through the audio tapes found in his empire, how the gates of hell opened in Jonestown.
