James "Jim" Robinson is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Alan Dale. Jim was created by Reg Watson as one of Neighbours' twelve original characters. He made his on-screen debut in the soap's first episode, which was broadcast on 18 March 1985. Jim was the patriarch of the Robinson family. Dale departed the show in 1993 after falling out with the producers over pay and his character was killed-off on 29 April 1993. He appeared in 1064 episodes, and was the most featured male character in the 1980s.
Creation and casting
Jim is one of the twelve original characters conceived by the creator and then executive producer of Neighbours, Reg Watson. Actor Robin Harrison was originally cast in the role and had already shot some scenes when contract negotiations broke down. The role was then offered to actor Alan Dale and the scenes featuring Harrison were reshot. Dale had been out of work for a few weeks following the cancellation of Possession, when he was offered the part by producer John Holmes. The character had intrigued Dale, who thought that parts of Jim's life echoed his own life at the time. He explained "It's like it was written for me. It's a great role and naturally it's one I can really relate to. You have to be fairly similar to a character you play, otherwise you'd go insane."
Jim Robinson, also known as Big Jim Robinson (December 25, 1892 – May 4, 1976) was an Americanjazz musician, based in New Orleans, renowned for his deep, wide-toned, robust "tailgate" style of trombone playing, using the slide to achieve a wide swoop between two notes (a technique that classical musicians call "glissando") and rhythmic effects.
Born Nathan Robinson in Deer Range, a tiny settlement on the west bank of lower Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, where he studied music under James Brown Humphrey. He arrived in New Orleans looking for work shortly before the Great Hurricane of 1915 which wiped out his home town of Deer Range, which prompted Robinson to settle in the city. In his youth, he got the nickname Jim Crow because of his facial features, which resembled a Native American. He was playing professionally in his twenties, from World War I on. In the 1920s he made his first recordings as a member of the Sam Morgan Jazz Band. He achieved gained greater fame with the resurgence of interest in early New Orleans jazz starting in the 1940s as a regular member of the bands of Bunk Johnson and George Lewis. Occasionally, he also led his own band and appeared regularly at Preservation Hall in his later years.

Career
A resident of Reseda in California, Robinson began competing with the NASCARWinston West Series in 1978. He soon began to enjoy success with the series winning the NASCAR Winston West Series Championship in 1983, 1984, and 1985 - finishing no worse than fifth in the series standings for eight years in a row. Robinson recorded 13 NASCAR Winston West Series wins and won most popular driver many times.
Robinson made his NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut on January 14, 1979 at the year’s season opener, the Winston Western 500 at Riverside International Raceway’s 2.62-mile road course at Riverside, California driving John Borneman’s No. 81 Borneman Plastering Chevrolet. Robinson completed 17 laps of the 119-lap event before suffering an engine failure. Robinson returned to Winston Cup Series competition driving A.J. Kurten’s No. 78 San-Val Lumber Supply Chevrolet in the NAPA Riverside 400 and in the Los Angeles Time 500 at the 2.5-mile Ontario Motor Speedway at Ontario, California.
