The Jet Age is Here! Flying on a Pan Am Clipper
The glamour of transatlantic air travel is highlighted in "6 1/2 Magic Hours," a 1958 film produced by Pam Am to promote their Jet Clipper service from New York to Europe, which featured service and cuisine modeled after Maxim's of Paris. A gem of mid-century advertising preserved in the Prelinger Archives.

Jet Age Aesthetic: Why its Appeal is so Enduring
From Disneyland to Life magazine, the jet plane not only defined a new age at a critical moment in the mid-20th century, it allowed people to imagine themselves living in the future.
In her new book Jet Age Aesthetic: the Glamour of Media in Motion, Vanessa Schwartz, professor of art and art history at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, argues that the jet created an aesthetic that circulated on the ground below, represented in realms as diverse as airport architecture, theme park design, film, and photography.

Air travel before the Jet Age wasn’t always glamorous. The relentless noise and vibration from a piston powered propeller aircraft often made long flights even more exhausting. Most aircraft also couldn’t fly high enough to avoid bad weather, so air sickness was more common.
After World War Two, as part of an effort to develop its civil aviation industry, Britain stunned the world by unveiling the world's jet airliner. The de Havilland Comet was sleek, quiet, and flew higher and faster than any airliner of the day. As piston propeller technology was reaching its limits, the conventional thinking was that jet engines were too unreliable and produced too little power relative to their fuel consumption. But the de Havilland Comet proved that jet travel was the future. When the Comet entered service in 1952, it immediately began breaking travel time records and became a point of national pride for Britain.
The de Havilland Comet was perhaps little too ahead of it’s time. With such a clean sheet design, there will still lessons to learn. When early Comets suffered from catastrophic depressurization incidents, the entire fleet was grounded and their Certificate of Airworthiness was revoked. Flaws in the design of the aircraft’s fuselage were resolved in later Comet versions. However, the rest of the world was now catching up, and manufacturers including Boeing and Douglas began to offer their own jet airliners. While later version Comets served airlines reliably, they were outsold by competing aircraft. There's no question However, that the comet paved the way. The British had taken a massive risk and brought the world into the jet age. #DeHavilland #CometAirliner #Airplane

In the beginning, man’s world was no larger than his eye could see, the far side of the earth was a mystery to him. But slowly man ventures out across the seas, and to all continents. By the beginning of our century, most of the world was on the map. But for ordinary man who wishes to see farther places, time was the enemy. At mark 2:40, the sky is now the element now, up here, man conquers time and calendar. At mark 2:50, jet surpasses all forms of transport due to its shortest time travel. As far back as you remember, there are those rare moment of discovery as seen at mark 3:40. There is a curiosity and an hunger to learn. In a child’s curiosity you can see the secrets to unlock the secret of universe. Hence, in our time, man enters into the Jet age as seen at mark 4:20. In this age of the jets, many are doing their jobs to change the world, clerks, mechanic, security, technicians of any kind. At mark 5:18 is a communication scheme, a memo reader. At mark 5:50 is training programs and designs involving engineers, mechanics going back to the classroom to keep in touch with the latest developments of the jet. At mark 6:20, the jet engine is stripped out and worked upon. At mark 6:28 is x rays of the wing parts. At 6:50 is the nerve center, the maintenance control center. At mark 7:30 is Henry Larson key man in maintenance, 39 years old, a long and master mechanic, a skilled technician. He has 18 years on the line with jet mechanic. At mark 8:10, he talks about the jet and his days.
At mark 8:50 is the Jet Clipper. Before a first passenger ever steps aboard, there have been series of tests over tests, more grilling processes. At mark 10:00 is an operational check. Check on engines, radios, light system and all. Preparing her for flight involves checking all functional systems as seen at mark 11:00 and rechecking again. At mark 11:40, the pilot and the mechanics communicates during the jet checking. At mark 11:55 is Captain Dan Michaels, the pilot on the jet checkup. He has a wide experience in jet and crafts. At mark 12:40, he checks on flight route. Up in the briefing room, the crews are waiting as seen at mark 13:10. Sign in and pass on regulations and orders just to make sure everyone is on his toes. Flight attendance come from 88countries as seen at mark 13:35. At mark 14:25, the passenger are been checked in. there are explorers and adventurers who are about to take off on the Pan American flight. At mark 15:05, is 45 minutes to departure, operational checks are been rounded up now. At mark 15:30, the departure is been communicated. What will it be like to fly in the jet. At mark 18:35 is the last minute check. At mark 19:25, the passengers are seen going aboard. All functions are then checked by the pilot and co pilots. The passengers settles in their seats with happiness and love. At mark 21:10, the captain welcomes the passengers onboard.
At mark 22:00, the jet is set for departure. The pilot then communicates the departure with the airport crew as seen at mark 22:10. At mark 23;58, the jet is airborne and up up at 3000ft. above the capricious wind and weather, outside the plane is degrees below 0. At mark 25:20, the passengers are served with meal. Up here the sky is blue, no sensation of speed and so quiet, majestic silence as distance slips past at 600miles an hour. So much more to be seen and learnt. The jets inscribe their signature across the sky as seen at mark 27:10, the great door sweeps open and man steps across into a bright new age.
Pan Am was the launch customer of the Boeing 707, placing an order for 20 in October 1955. It also ordered 25 of Douglas's DC-8, which could seat six across. Pan Am's first scheduled jet flight was from New York Idlewild to Paris Le Bourget (stopping at Gander to refuel) on October 26, 1958, with Boeing 707–121 Clipper America with 111 passengers. The 320 "Intercontinental" series 707 in 1959-60, and the Douglas DC-8 in March 1960, enabled non-stop transatlantic crossings with a viable payload in both directions.

and now she's dancing on her own
to the kind of disco sound
that makes her glad he's not around
she's looking at you
so maybe you're looking too
do you want to be her
or don't you?
of course you do
but would she be you?
he doesn't dance as good as she
why don't you save a seat for me
as the sun came and went
from the safety of a jet
he gave Atlanta one last look
then dropped his head inside the book
that he never gets to read
maybe he'll just get some sleep
she's looking at you
so maybe you're looking too
do you want to be her
or don't you?
of course you do
but would she be you?
