Lens is a full international for the Netherlands, earning over 25 caps. In August 2010, he received his first international cap against Ukraine and scored a debut goal. He was part of the Dutch squad which came third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Club career
AZ
Lens made his debut into professional football in the 2005–06 season. He played two matches for AZ that season. Before that he played in the youth team of AZ, FC Omniworld, Ajax Amsterdam and his regional team, Spartaan.
The 1997–98 season was Manchester United's sixth season in the Premier League, and their 23rd consecutive season in the top division of English football. The campaign ended in disastrous fashion, having been pipped to the Premier League title by Arsenal, who managed a ten-match winning streak in the last two months of the season as well as being eliminated by league strugglers Barnsley and French outfit AS Monaco in the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, respectively. To make matters worse, United entered March still in contention for a League and European double after opening up an 12-point gap, regardless of the fact that nearest challengers Arsenal had three games in hand. This was manager Alex Ferguson's first trophyless season since the 1994–95 campaign.
Following the loss of talismanic captain and star striker, Eric Cantona at the end of the previous season, Ferguson acquired the services of England international Teddy Sheringham as a direct replacement on a three-year deal from Tottenham Hotspur for £3.5million. Cantona's departure meant that Roy Keane was promoted as captain and a reshuffle of squad numbers occurred; David Beckham was awarded the coveted number 7 shirt and Sheringham was given Beckham's former squad number 10. Henning Berg was the only other new face to arrive at Old Trafford from Blackburn Rovers for a £5million fee at the start of the season.
Veteran players Brian McClair and Gary Pallister, along with a host of younger and less experienced players such as goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington and striker Graeme Tomlinson, had left the club before the season began. The big news of the pre-season was the arrival of Dutch defender Jaap Stam for a club record fee of £10.75million. Other additions included striker Dwight Yorke and Swedish winger Jesper Blomqvist. Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel announced his intention to leave the club after eight years at Old Trafford, joining Sporting Clube de Portugal at the end of the season.
Manchester United Football Club was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. The team initially played games against other departments and rail companies at their home ground at North Road, but by 1888 the club had become a founding member of The Combination, a regional football league. However, following the league's dissolution before the end of its first season, Newton Heath joined the newly formed Football Alliance, which ran for three seasons before being merged with The Football League. This resulted in the club starting the 1892–93 season in the First Division, by which time it had become independent of the rail company, dropped the "LYR" from its name and moved to a new ground at Bank Street. After just two seasons, the club was relegated to the Second Division.
In January 1902, with debts of £2,670 – equivalent to £260,000 in 2016 – the club was served with a winding-up order. Captain Harry Stafford found four local businessmen – including John Henry Davies, who became club president – each willing to invest £500 in return for a direct interest in running the club. As a mark of this fresh start, on 24 April 1902, the club's name was changed to "Manchester United". Under Ernest Mangnall, who became club secretary in 1903, the team finished as Second Division runners-up in 1906 and secured promotion to the First Division, which it won in 1908 – the club's first league title. The following season began with victory in the first ever Charity Shield and ended with the club's first FA Cup title. Manchester United moved to a new stadium at Old Trafford in 1910, and won the First Division for the second time in 1911, but at the end of the following season, secretary Mangnall left to join Manchester City.
Manchester was settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community, although at the time it was known just as Orford Parish (the name that can be found on the memorial to the Revolutionary soldiers from the town). The many rivers and brooks provided power for paper, lumber and textile industries, and the town quickly evolved into an industrial center. The town of Hartford once included the land now occupied by the towns of Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. In 1783, East Hartford became a separate town, which included Manchester in its city limits until 1823.
The Pitkin Glassworks operated from 1783-1830 as the first successful glassworks in Connecticut. The Pitkin Glassworks Ruin have been preserved by a historical society.
The station has two side platforms in the median of the Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway). The platforms can be accessed using elevators and lifts from Manchester Avenue below the freeway. This station has two parking lots, one or each side of the freeway with a total of 127 spaces. The entrance to the station is provided by stairs and elevators under the freeway. Metro Local line 115 stops directly below the station at the street level (Manchester Avenue). On September 6, 2011, the new stop located directly below the Manchester Silver Line station opened for Metro Local line: 115. The new stop is only for eastbound passengers. A westbound stop for lines 115 was not constructed. The station was upgraded with improved lighting in December 2010. CCTV and next bus trip arrival television screens were added onto the station in December 2012 and the monitors became activated on June 2013.

A tactical analysis of Ferguson's 4-4-2 system that Man Utd used in the 1999 treble winning season. Ferguson used an energetic pressing system with Beckham, Scholes, Keane and Giggs in a midfield four and two strikers of Solskjaer, Sheringham, Yorke or Cole up front. The backline of Neville, Johnsen, Stam and Irwin with Schmichael in goal is regarded as one of the greatest back line's in English football history.

In the last full season before the turn of the Millennium, history was made as Manchester United became the first English club to win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League treble, and their fate in all three competitions was sealed during an incredible 10-day period in May 1999.
The first of an unprecedented trio of trophies was the Premier League title. After locking horns with Arsenal and Chelsea throughout the campaign, the Gunners fell short by just one point as Andrew Cole sealed a comeback victory for Man Utd against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on the final day.
The gripping finale followed a campaign full of landmark moments, as the Premier League Academy system was set up, England got three Champions League places for the first time and the Premier League's turnover rose to £281million.
In the summer of 1998, Man Utd looked to bounce back from Arsenal's maiden Premier League title triumph with the additions of Jesper Blomqvist, Dutch centre-back Jaap Stam and Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke, while Gianluca Vialli brought Marcel Desailly to Chelsea after he starred in France's 1998 FIFA World Cup triumph.
Another shining light in the summer's World Cup was 18-year-old England forward Michael Owen, and he hit the ground running on his return with a hat-trick for Liverpool, under the stewardship of Roy Evans and newly appointed joint-manager Gerard Houllier, as they beat Newcastle United 4-1 in Ruud Gullit's first match in charge at St James' Park.
In September, Christian Gross was the next manager to depart and he was replaced at Spurs by George Graham, who had led his Leeds United side to a thrilling 3-3 draw at White Hart Lane in his last match before taking over. Spurs finished 11th and won the League Cup final, with the dazzling form of winger David Ginola recognised with the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year awards.
Meanwhile, David O'Leary made the step up from assistant to manager at Leeds and guided them to a fourth-place finish, with striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink the Premier League's joint top scorer, alongside Owen and Yorke, with 18 goals.
Villa compensated for the loss of Yorke by recruiting Dion Dublin and Paul Merson, and they flourished under the tutelage of John Gregory, spending much of the first half of the season at the top of the table. Dublin's double helped them beat Arsenal 3-2 at Villa Park in December, but a 10-match winless run at the turn of the year took them out of the title race.
Villa's poor form in 1999 and a difficult winter spell for Leeds meant the title race was between Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. After losing their opening match at Coventry City, Chelsea went on a 22-match unbeaten run before Dennis Bergkamp's goal for the Gunners consigned them to their second league defeat in January.
Man Utd came to the fore and five successive wins put them in the ascendancy in February. In one of those successes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four goals in 14 minutes after coming on as a substitute as they thrashed Nottingham Forest 8-1 at the City Ground, the biggest away win in Premier League history.
Man Utd remained unbeaten for the rest of the campaign but only one defeat apiece for Arsenal and Chelsea during that time took the title race down to the wire. Steve Guppy's stoppage-time leveller for Leicester City at Stamford Bridge landed a damaging blow to Chelsea's hopes, while Liverpool held Man Utd to a 2-2 draw on the same weekend.
Arsenal's 1-0 loss to Leeds in their penultimate match of the season and a 0-0 draw for Man Utd against Blackburn Rovers, who were subsequently consigned to relegation four years after being crowned Premier League champions, meant Sir Alex Ferguson's side were one point ahead of the Gunners going into the final day.

Remembering when Manchester United won the Champions League and the treble.
On 26 May 1999, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struck late to secure the most famous win in club history
On May 26, 1999, Manchester United produced arguably their most famous night as they won the Champions League by beating Bayern Munich 2-1.
Here, we take a look back at that memorable match in Barcelona.
Manchester United had dominated the domestic scene for most of the decade, with Premier League trophy after Premier League trophy, but they had always fallen short in Europe, having only ever reached the semi-final of the Champions League.
After a memorable run to the final, including a brilliant semi-final victory over Juventus, it looked like being a familiar let down at the Nou Camp as Bayern scored early through Mario Basler and then resolutely defended their lead.
It could have been 2-0 shortly before the 90th minute but Carsten Jancker's overhead effort hit the crossbar.
That Jancker effort provided one of the biggest ever 'Sliding Doors' moments in the history of the game.
Minutes later, with the game in injury time, United forced a corner. With Peter Schmeichel, playing his last game for the club, joining the attack, David Beckham's delivery was cleared to Ryan Giggs on the edge of the box and his mis-hit shot was swept home by Teddy Sheringham to make it 1-1.
Most teams would have settled for extra-time, but not this United one, as two minutes later they were on the attack again and another corner fell to current manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer to prod home at the far post.
Unrivalled scenes of ecstasy followed as United finally got their hands on the big one.
Late goals were a trademark of Sir Alex Ferguson's era so it was fitting that the finest night of his spell in charge finished that way.
Although the Scot went on to win the Champions League again nine years later, this was a landmark victory that completed the story for one of the best teams in English football's history.
It spurred him on to create several more fine teams at Old Trafford before his 2013 retirement.
The Scot finished with two Champions Leagues, a Cup Winners' Cup, 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

Man Utd capture their fifth Premier League title as part of an historic treble

On May 26, 1999, Manchester United produced arguably their most famous night as they won the Champions League by beating Bayern Munich 2-1.
