Jennifer Dunn: Desperation, Resentment, and Rebellion in Rural Montana
In the closing decades of the twentieth century, the American West saw an increase in anti-government and white supremacy extremism. Montana had a number of events where residents resisted the federal government culminating in the Montana Freemen, a group who engaged in an 81-day armed standoff with the FBI in the spring and summer of 1996. Why were western residents so angry at the federal government who they believed was, at best, ignoring rural western communities, and at worst, threatening their liberty and their lives? To answer this question, Dunn examines three rural Montana communities -- Denton, Jordan and Libby -- each of whom clashed with the government at the end of the century. While these conflicts developed for different reasons, residents’ responses to the encounters and th...

Water scarcity will increase as the planet warms. Coupled with increasing urbanization, climate change will spur increased construction of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) to provide clean drinking water as well as supply irrigation and other water consumption needs. Accordingly, one effect of climate change will be to drive up energy consumption in the wastewater sector, which may, in turn, drive up greenhouse gas emissions associated with water provision. Critical Rhetoric in the Age of the (First) Reality TV President: A Critique of Freedom and Domination

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine Donald Trump’s tweets from a critical rhetorical orientation. This article suggests that the identity constructed in Trump’s tweets extends the persona he developed on the reality television series The Apprentice to construct a vision of a reality TV president. Therefore, the logics of reality television serve as criteria to evaluate how his tweets construct his “rhetorical authenticity” or strategically constructed “real-ness” as a reality TV president. Drawing from McKerrow’s essay on critical rhetoric, the crit...

This presentation will summarize three efforts to characterize emissions from WWTP and how they may change under climate change scenarios. First, there have been several increasingly detailed efforts to inventory the wastewater sector in the United States. We will describe our current efforts in this area as well as the state of WWTP inventory information for other countries and regions of interest including the EU, India, Brazil, and Mexico. Second, we will describe technology being developed through a National Science Foundation project led by Northwestern University to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from WWTPs. Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential approximately 300 times greater than carbon dioxide. We are using life cycle assessment to guide technology development towards process and product choices that drive these emissions down and limit greenhouse gases from a systems level that considers the entire WWTP. Finally, we will describe our collaborations with Ca’ Foscari and the CMCC to enhance integrated assessment models’ treatment of the WWTP sector including how it will evolve as the climate changes and how it can represent emerging technology that can reduce the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions.
