Driving Around Jefferson City, Missouri in 4k Video
Filmed on Monday, November 27 2023, I drive around Jefferson City, MO to see what's going on.
When the Missouri Territory was organized in 1812, St. Louis was Missouri's seat of government, and St. Charles would serve as the next capital. However, Jefferson City was chosen as the new capital in 1821.
The village first was called "Lohman's Landing", and when the legislature decided to relocate there, they proposed the name "Missouriopolis" before settling on the city of "Jefferson" to honor Thomas Jefferson. Over the years, the city was most often referred to as "Jefferson City" and the name stuck.
The State Capitol of Missouri is located in Jefferson City.

Jefferson City, Missouri Drone Footage
Took Amtrak's Missouri River Runner train from St Louis to Jefferson City, Missouri, the capital of the Show Me State. While underwhelming by capital city standards, the Capitol building is among the finest looking in America, with it's towering dome dominating the skyline. Perched along the Missouri River, the city is named after the 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson, and the area was an early stop for the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800s. There was relatively little to see outside the government buildings, and the city was quiet and largely devoid of people during our weekend trip. Jefferson City also includes the old Missouri State Penitentiary, a former prison built in the 1850s and closed in the early 2000s. All in all, it was an enjoyable trip, but one I don't think needs ...

Capital of the Show-Me State | Jefferson City, MO
As we enter the state of Missouri again after just over a year, we get to see what lies beyond its easternmost reaches and witness for the first time the waters of the famed river from which this state gets its name. The Missouri River is entrenched in history and significance, serving as a navigable medium of transportation for early pioneers and traders en route towards far off lands. As Missouri achieved statehood in the early 1800s, an area of land in the state's geographic center along the aforementioned river's bank was selected to become its capital city. Named in honor of the 3rd president whose decisions transformed the fate of the American frontier, Jefferson City stands today not as the largest nor most prominent among other well-known Missourian cities (think St. Louis) but nev...

Jefferson City has many historic buildings that have stood the test of time. Visit the State Penitentiary, the Old Governor’s Mansion, or the Capitol Building. Many will make you feel as if you’ve been transported back to the Civil War era, such as the Jefferson Historic Landing Site and the Missouri Farm Bureau Log Home.
The city also offers plenty of museums to spend your time in for more glimpses into its history. Go to the Museum of Missouri Military History to see how the state has played a part in almost every American conflict or the Missouri State Museum for a more complete picture of its history.
Despite its name, Jefferson City has a high concentration of state parks. Stop by Rock Bridge and enter ts freezing Devil’s Icebox Cave, traverse the long Katy Trail at the state park that bears its name, ride your ATV through Finger Lakes State Park, or go to Binder State Park to play with your children or pets.
Jefferson City residents also know how to have fun. Throw down at the Capitol Bowl, play at the arcade in the Capital Mall, then dance the night away at the Mission LLC nightclub.
If you need a quick drink, stand in line for a unique experience at Prison Brews, a brewery that’s decorated itself to match the nearby Penitentiary. You can also stand in line to get a treat from Central Dairy if you’re patient enough.

Louis) but nevertheless manages to create a balance between charming "quiet American riverside city" and orderly state capital. An outstanding work of neoclassical architecture, the state capitol is the iconic must-see centerpiece of the city and can be located with ease from anywhere within the urban area. Other major interest points in Jeff City include the old landing point alongside the river, still intact with its fascinating buildings from the antebellum days, and the Missouri State Penitentiary, a facility once harboring notorious criminals of the past and one of the oldest prisons in this part of the country. Be as pleasantly surprised as I was with the under-appreciated appeal of Mid-Missouri!
