The First Japanese — The Paleolithic Period in Japan
The First Japanese — The Paleolithic Period in Japan
The history of Japan was once thought to have begun with the Jomon Period until new discoveries revealed that Japan was inhabited by people even longer than had previously been thought. In this video, we look at the creation of Japan through its mythology, the changing geography of Japan and possible, undiscovered people who may have lived there, and the first confirmed humans to reside in Japan: The Minatogawans. We follow their lives until a new arrival into Japan, the Ancient North Siberian Yana people, lead to a new status quo from which the Jomon would rise. This is a history of the Paleolithic Period of Japan.

Prehistory of Japan (Paleolithic, Jōmon and Yayoi periods)
In this episode I will talk about the first human habitation in the Japanese archipelago during the Paleolithic period, and how the Japanese Paleolithic is unique in that it incorporates one of the earliest known sets of ground stone and polished stone tools in the world.
After that I will cover the Jōmon period, when Japan was inhabited by a hunter-gatherer culture that reached a considerable degree of sedentism and cultural complexity. The final perioad of which I will speak is the Yayoi period, which covers the Neolithic and the Bronze Age in Japan. The written history of Japan began with the first written records about them from Chinese sources in 57 AD, and the Kofun period, when most of Japan gradually unified under a single kingdom.

This woman lived in what is now Japan 4,000 years ago. | FOG OF HISTORY
On this channel I show you real people who lived on our planet many years ago. For fans of Anthropology and History. Today I'm going to tell you about....
She belonged to the Jōmon culture. Her remains were found in 1998 on Rebun Island, which is located off the northern coast of Hokkaido. Scientists were able to read her DNA from her tooth. The study showed that she had dark skin, brown eyes and dark, curly hair. Most likely she had freckles, she had a genetic trait that allowed her to perfectly digest fatty foods, something nowadays only found in Arctic populations. This means that she had a lot of fatty sea meat in her diet. She also, unlike many modern Japanese, had a good tolerance for alcohol. Her genes also showed that she was at high risk of developing solar lentigines or darkened...

This is the story of the Jomon Period, from the rise of the Jomon to the arrival of the Austronesians and the colonization of Korea, culminating in the arrival of a foreign group who will make Japan their own.

Her genes also showed that she was at high risk of developing solar lentigines or darkened skin if she spent too much time in the sun, so the artist added some dark spots to her face.
Despite her differences from today's Japanese population, the Jomon woman is more closely related to today's Japanese, Ulchi, an indigenous culture from eastern Russia, Koreans, aboriginal Taiwanese and Filipinos than to the Han Chinese

Japan [b] is an island country in East Asia. It is located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland, and is bordered on the west by the Sea of Japan and extends from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. The Japanese archipelago consists of four major islands—Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu—and thousands of smaller islands, covering 377,975 square kilometres (145,937 sq mi). Japan has a population of nearly 124 million as of 2024, and is the eleventh-most populous country. Its capital and largest city is Tokyo; the Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with more than 38 million inhabitants as of 2016. Japan is divided into 47 administrative prefectures and eight traditional regions. About three-quarters of the country's terrain is mountainous and heavily forested, concentrating its agriculture and highly urbanized population along its eastern coastal plains. The country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making its islands prone to destructive earthquakes and tsunamis.

The first known habitation of the archipelago dates to the Upper Paleolithic, with the beginning Japanese Paleolithic dating to c. 36,000 BC. Between the fourth and sixth centuries, its kingdoms were united under an emperor in Nara, and later Heian-kyō. From the 12th century, actual power was held by military dictators (shōgun) and feudal lords (daimyō), and enforced by warrior nobility (samurai). After rule by the Kamakura and Ashikaga shogunates and a century of warring states, Japan was unified in 1600 by the Tokugawa shogunate, which implemented an isolationist foreign policy. In 1853, a United States fleet forced Japan to open trade to the West, which led to the end of the shogunate and the restoration of imperial power in 1868. In the Meiji period, the Empire of Japan pursued rapid industrialization and modernization, as well as militarism and overseas colonization. In 1937, Japan invaded China, and in 1941 attacked the United States and European colonial powers, entering World War II as an Axis power. After suffering defeat in the Pacific War and two atomic bombings, Japan surrendered in 1945 and came under Allied occupation. After the war, the country underwent rapid economic growth, although its economy has stagnated since 1990.
Japan is a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislature, the National Diet. A great power and the only Asian member of the G7, Japan has constitutionally renounced its right to declare war, but maintains one of the world's strongest militaries. A developed country with one of the world's largest economies by nominal GDP, Japan is a global leader in science and technology and the automotive, robotics, and electronics industries. It has one of the world's highest life expectancies, though it is undergoing a population decline. Japan's culture is well known around the world, including its art, cuisine, film, music, and popular culture, which includes prominent comics, animation, and video game industries #strongcountrys

From the 12th century, actual power was held by military dictators (shōgun) and feudal lords (daimyō), and enforced by warrior nobility (samurai).
