The Orthodox Church has a rich and ancient tradition of celebrating feasts and fasts according to a liturgical calendar. However, not all Orthodox Christians follow the same calendar today. In this video, we will explore the history and the implications of the Old and New Calendar in the Orthodox Church.
The Old Calendar, also known as the Julian Calendar, was the original calendar used by the Orthodox Church since its inception. It is currently 13 days behind the modern civil calendar, which is based on the Gregorian Calendar. The New Calendar, also known as the Revised Julian Calendar, is a modified version of the Gregorian Calendar that was adopted by some Orthodox Churches in the 20th century, in an attempt to unify with the rest of Christendom and to correct the astronomical discrepancies of the Julian Calendar.
However, the adoption of the New Calendar was not without controversy and resistance. Some Orthodox Churches, such as the Churches of Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia, and the monasteries of Mount Athos, refused to change their calendar and remained faithful to the Old Calendar. They argued that the New Calendar violated the ancient canons and traditions of the Orthodox Church and that it disrupted the unity and harmony of the Orthodox world. They also claimed that the New Calendar compromised the Orthodox witness to the world, by conforming to the Western standards and pressures.
The result of this situation is that the Orthodox Churches that follow the New Calendar celebrate most of the fixed feasts, such as Christmas and the Annunciation, on the same dates as the other Christian Churches, while the Orthodox Churches that follow the Old Calendar celebrate them 13 days later. However, all Orthodox Churches still celebrate movable feasts, such as Easter and Pentecost, according to the Old Calendar, as they are determined by the Paschal cycle.
In this video, we will examine the arguments and perspectives of both sides of the calendar issue, and we will try to understand the theological, historical, and pastoral implications of this division. We will also discuss the possibility and the challenges of restoring the calendar unity among the Orthodox Churches, and the role of the faithful in this process.
We hope that this video will help you learn more about the Orthodox Church and its calendar and that it will inspire you to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the Orthodox tradition.
