Janey Godley (born 20 January 1961) is a Scottish comedian and writer. Her autobiography, Handstands in the Dark, was a UK Top Ten best-seller and she was a 2006 Scotswoman of The Year finalist. She was a columnist for the Monday edition of The Scotsman newspaper from 2007-09.
Early life and career
Godley was brought up in Shettleston, Glasgow, one of four children of Jim and Annie Currie. At age 18, Godley, a Protestant, married Sean Storrie, also 18, whose nickname was "Mad Eyes", from a large Catholic family with ties to Glasgow's gangster underground. One of her new brothers-in-law spat on her at the reception. One of seven sons, Sean was raised with his brothers by George Storrie, an East Glasgow gangster. When "Old George" died, the Kray brothers sent a wreath. As of 2005, the couple was still together after 25 years of marriage. They have one child, a daughter, Ashley. Her 2005 autobiography Handstands in the Dark describes working-class Glasgow from 1961–94.
For 14 years, she ran a public house, the Weavers Inn (formerly the Nationalist Bar, later the Calton Bar) in the tough Calton area of Glasgow, where she staged the first performances by comedian and magician Jerry Sadowitz.
