James Montgomery Flagg (June 18, 1877 – May 27, 1960) was an American artist and illustrator. He worked in media ranging from fine art painting to cartooning, but is best remembered for his political posters.
He was enthusiastic about drawing from a young age, and had illustrations accepted by national magazines by the age of 12 years. By 14 he was a contributing artist for Life magazine, and the following year was on the staff of another magazine, Judge. From 1894 through 1898, he attended the Art Students League of New York. He studied fine art in London and Paris from 1898–1900, after which he returned to the United States, where he produced countless illustrations for books, magazine covers, political and humorous cartoons, advertising, and spot drawings. Among his creations was a comic strip that appeared regularly in Judge from 1903 until 1907, about a tramp character titled Nervy Nat.
In 1915, he accepted commissions from Calkins and Holden to create advertisements for Edison Photo and Adler Rochester Overcoats but only on the condition that his name would not be associated with the campaign.
The Very Reverend James Francis Montgomery (1818 – 1897) was trained as an Anglicanpriest and served as the first Dean in St Marys Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh. He is usually simply referred to as Dean Montgomery.
Life
He was born on 10 July 1818 the son of Robert Montgomery and Elizabeth Mason.
He lived close to the cathedral at 17 Atholl Crescent, a very large townhouse in Edinburgh's fashionable west end.
He died at home on 21 September 1897 and is buried in the northern Victorian extension of Dean Cemetery.
Memorials
A fine recumbent effigy of Montgomery exists on the north side of the choir stalls, sculpted by James Pittendrigh Macgillivray five years after his death (1902).
Family
He married Elizabeth Mary Elphinstone on 17 January 1860. They had no children.
Flagg (Old NorseA sod of peat) is a small Peak District village, set in the Derbyshire Dales, halfway between the small market town of Bakewell and the spa town of Buxton, in the area officially known as "The White Peak". 1000 feet above sea level, Flagg is recorded in the Domesday Book as "Flagun", and is believed to have originally been a Viking settlement engaged primarily in lead mining, the evidence of which can still be seen today with many spoil heaps and disused mine shafts in the area.
In the mid-19th century, well dressings were held during "Wakes Week", which was always begun on the first Sunday after June 24. There were two wells, one opposite to Ivy House Farm, and the other opposite to Edge Close Farm.
These days, Flagg is predominantly a farming village, concentrating on all aspects of agriculture, but is actually best known throughout the United Kingdom for the point-to-point races held annually on Easter Tuesday by the High Peak Hunt. On one occasion, King Edward VIII, the then Prince of Wales, actually rode at the races.

Have You A Good Skull? (1934)
Titles read: "Have you a good skull? Here's a new way of judging beauty - by James Montgomery Flagg, the famous American Artist."
Location of events unknown.
Various shots of American artist / illustrator James Montgomery Flagg drawing a portrait of a young woman. He explains that real beauty in a human being must start with the proper formation of the skull. The girl is briefly seen with light directly overhead, so that shadows are cast in the skull, below the cheekbones and nose.
He talks to camera as he sketches, referring to this model as one of the wood-nymph or elfin type of beauties. He cites Catherine (Katherine ?) Dale Owen as one of the classical beauty types. The finished portrait shows the girl looking rather more sultry than she looks in the film. James turns to...
