James Hong (traditional Chinese:吳漢章; simplified Chinese:吴汉章; pinyin:Wú Hànzhāng; Jyutping:Ng4 Hon3zoeng1; born February 22, 1929) is an American actor and director. He is a former president of the Association of Asian/Pacific American Artists (AAPAA).
Early life
Hong was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, Frank W. Hong, emigrated from Hong Kong to Chicago, Illinois via Canada, where he owned a restaurant. Hong's grandfather was from Taishan. For his early education, Hong moved to Hong Kong, and returned to the United States at the age of ten. He studied civil engineering at the University of Southern California, but later became interested in acting and trained with Jeff Corey. Hong was a road engineer in Los Angeles County for seven and a half years, acting during his vacations and sick days. He finally quit engineering for good to devote himself to acting and voice work full-time.
James Hong is the co-founder of the Internet website Hot or Not launched in 2000.
Along with his co-founder Jim Yong, they sold the company in 2008 to Avid Life Media.
Hong has a computer science degree and an MBA. After selling Hot or Not, Hong became an angel investor in Silicon Valley.
"Sentiment is weak right now and we're seeing a lot of short-term retail money selling."
"Max and I started working out when we were both living in Mountain View. Everything was a contest. Could I do this many pushups? He'll have to do that many, plus two."
"He's a very intense guy. He needs to be working on something all the time."
"The Goldman report really surprised people and added fuel to the fire."
You’ve definitely seen James Hong’s face before. From “Blade Runner” and “Airplane!” to “The Big Bang Theory” and “Seinfeld,” Hong has racked up over 500 credits. That’s more than any actor living or dead. Born in Minnesota, Hong is of Chinese descent and started acting in Hollywood in the 1950s. He has spent his career combating clichés and fighting for more opportunities for Asians in television and film. At the age of 90, Hong is showing no signs of slowing down.

1. SOUNDBITE (English) James Hong and Jack Black, actors - on the Chinese audience's reaction to the first movie:
Hong: "When they first showed the "Kung Fu Panda" feature in in China, the government did not want their national symbol, the panda, to be funny, you know."
Black: "Wow"
Hong: "Somehow they, when they showed it, people lined around and around the block to see the fun side of their panda that, you know, it's not just a so-called animal of some kind. Po does have a life and a very full life and a humorous life and brings life to their happiness. You know, so it opened up a whole new world of theatrics for China and the people around the world. And I'm very glad to be part of all that."
Black: "Wow. That's so cool. I had no idea about that. Thank you for bringing that to light, James. That's cool."
PRODUCTION: MARTINA INCHINGOLO

Over nearly seven decades, James Hong has racked up more film and TV credits than almost anyone. Even more impressive, the character actor did so while confronting demeaning stereotypes in Hollywood. Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz talks with the constantly-working Hong about a career that began with entertaining U.S. troops during the Korean War, and extended to such treasured films as "Chinatown" and "Big Trouble in Little China."
