Jalisco (/həˈlɪskoʊ/; Spanish:[xaˈlisko]), officially Free and Sovereign State of Jalisco (Spanish:Estado Libre y Soberano de Jalisco[esˈtaðo ˈliβɾe i soβeˈɾano ðe xaˈlisko]), is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is located in Western Mexico and divided into 125 municipalities, and its capital city is Guadalajara. Jalisco is one of the most important states in Mexico because of its natural resources as well as its history. Many of the characteristic traits of Mexican culture, particularly outside Mexico City, are originally from Jalisco, such as mariachi, ranchera music, birria, tequila, jaripeo, etc. Hence, the state's motto: "Jalisco es Mexico." Economically, it is ranked third in the country, with industries centered in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, the second largest metropolitan area in Mexico.
The state is home to two significant indigenous populations, the Huichols and the Nahuas. There is also a significant foreign population, mostly retirees from the United States and Canada, living in the Lake Chapala and Puerto Vallarta areas.
Mexican wine and wine making began with the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, when they brought vines from Europe to modern day Mexico, the oldest wine-growing region in the Americas. Although there were indigenous grapes before the Spanish conquest, the Spaniards found that Spanish grapevines also did very well in the colony of New Spain (Mexico) and by the 17th century wine exports from Spain to the New World fell. In 1699, Charles II of Spain prohibited wine making in Mexico, with the exception of wine for Church purposes. From then until Mexico’s Independence, wine was produced in Mexico only on a small scale. After Independence, wine making for personal purposes was no longer prohibited and production rose, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many other European immigrant groups helped with the comeback of wine in Mexico. However, the Mexican Revolution set back wine production, especially in the north of the country. Wine production in Mexico has been rising in both quantity and quality since the 1980s, although competition from foreign wines and 40% tax on the product makes competing difficult within Mexico. Mexico is not traditionally a wine-drinking country, but rather prefers beer, tequila and mezcal. Interest in Mexican wine, especially in the major cities and tourists areas (along with the introduction into the US on a small scale), has grown along with Mexican wines’ reputation throughout the world. Many Mexican companies have received numerous awards. Various wine producers from Mexico have won international awards for their products.
Mexico was a barque that was wrecked off Southport on 9 December 1886. She was repaired only to be lost in Scottish waters in 1890.
Shipwreck
On 9 December 1886, the Mexico was on its way from Liverpool to Guayaquil, Ecuador when it was caught in a storm. Lifeboats were launched from Lytham, St. Annes and Southport to rescue the crew. The Lytham lifeboat Charles Biggs, which was on her maiden rescue, rescued the twelve crew but both the St. Annes lifeboat Laura Janet and the Southport lifeboat Eliza Fernley were capsized, and 27 of the 29 crew were drowned. To date, this is the worst loss of RNLI crew in a single incident.Mexico came ashore off Birkdale, opposite the Birkdale Palace Hotel.
Aftermath
Sixteen women were left widows, and fifty children lost their fathers. Queen Victoria and the Kaiser sent their condolences to the families of the lifeboatmen. An appeal was launched to raise money to provide a memorial to those killed, and the organisation by Sir Charles Macara of the first street collections in Manchester in 1891 led to the first flag days. The disaster has a permanent memorial in Lytham St. Annes lifeboat house. An appeal has been launched by the Lytham St. Annes Civic Society for the restoration of four of the memorials.
The main action of Mexico takes place in Mexico over a three-day period in the fictional city of Toledo in 1961. The occasion is the annual bullfighting festival, at which two matadors — one an acclaimed hero of the sport, the other a scrapping contender — are prepared to fight to the death for fame and glory.
Through the memories of the book's narrator, Norman Clay, an American journalist of Spanish and Indian descent, Michener provides plenty of historical background, including a depiction of the gruesome human sacrifices that took place hundreds of years before on the city's periphery. The story focuses on bullfighting, but also provides great insight into Mexican culture. The reader follows the bulls from their breeding to their "sorting" to the pageantry and spectacle of the bullring, where picadors and banderilleros prepare the bull for the entrance of the matador with his red cape. The author creates one of his most memorable characters in the bullfighting "critic" Leon Ledesma, a flamboyant sportswriter who elevates bullfighting into an art form through his grandiloquent essays.

Jalisco, Mexico
Located in Mexico's western region along the Pacific coast, Jalisco borders the states of Nayarit, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes to the north, Colima and Michoacan to the south, and Guanajuato to the east.
Throughout most of the state you'll get a mild climate, however the coastal region is hot and humid. The first place you can visit is Guadalajara, the state capital, where you'll enjoy a festive atmosphere full of art and culture. Some of the most important religious and civic buildings there are the Cathedral, Palacio de Gobierno, Teatro Degollado and Instituto Cultural Cabañas, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. On the Front Line With Mexico’s Warring Cartels
The end of 2021 will mark 15 years since the start of Mexico's “guerra contra el narcotráfico,” a war against drug trafficking that officially began in December 2006, when thousands of soldiers were deployed to topple the cartel terrorizing the state of Michoacán. The war soon spread and plunged the entire country into a downward spiral of violence that continues today.
The current war in Michoacán is between the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel or CJNG, led by a notorious kingpin known as El Mencho, and an alliance of groups known as the United Cartels. Some communities also rely on citizen-led militias to battle the cartels.

Jalisco
Tequila and Mariachis come together in this central-western part of Mexico, the geographical point where the state of Jalisco is located, with its bountiful lands that have become a synonym for Mexican identity and the cradle of charrería -- Mexican rodeo -- jaripeos and palenques.
A journey through any one of the corners of Jalisco can be transformed into an exciting adventure on which all kinds of activities can be enjoyed in close contact with nature, with camping and water sports that reveal all that the lands of Jalisco have to offer.

After living in Guadalajara, Jalisco for over 4 months, we found a LOT to love about it. The activities, the people, the weather, and more. However, many people have told us they're planning to visit or move to Guadalajara after watching our videos about it. We felt obligated to share the "other side" of the story: the ugly side of Guadalajara, Mexico.
So what is it like living in Guadalajara as an expat? Well, we answer that in many of our other videos about Guadalajara, Jalisco. But if you're wondering what might be some of the downsides of traveling to or living in GDL - this travel vlog is for you.
These are things that are less desirable or possibly deal-breakers about GDL, México for some people. Hope these help you learn a little more about one of our FAVORITE cities in Mexico, Guadalajara.

Near Guadalajara you can visit the cities of Tlaquepaque and Tonala, famous for their ceramics products. You can also check out important religious centers such as San Juan de los Lagos and Zapopan, which receives thousands of pilgrims each year. At Lake Chapala and Ajijic you can take long walks, go horseback riding, or play golf and various water sports.
Heading toward the coast, be sure to visit Tapalpa and the picturesque town of Tequila, where blue agave grows for the production of Mexico's world-famous tequila.
Along Jalisco's 280 km (173 mi) of coastline, you'll discover fascinating beach destinations, including Puerto Vallarta and Costalegre. There you can enjoy top-notch hotels and excellent services offered at the spas and exclusive golf courses.

VICE News reporter Keegan Hamilton and producer Miguel Fernández Flores traveled to the epicenter of the conflict in Michoacán, meeting cartel members on both sides and seeking to understand if anything will or can change for the better.

We are both major Tequila fans, we might even go as far as saying it’s our favorite liquor! Serve us up a margarita loaded with some tequila and we are in heaven. So of course when in Guadalajara we couldn’t miss the opportunity to go straight to the source. We visited Tequila, Jalisco the birthplace of Tequila and will rave about it for a while.
We’ve been on tequila tours before in Cancun and Mazatlan, but we were able to experience more than just a tasting here. We give a rough guide to follow, from how to get there to where to go, how much it costs and what to expect. Feel free to use this guide for your next trip to TEQUILA!
We eat breakfast overlooking the beautiful Church and then drink quite a bit of Tequila. There are two distilleries that we visit in today’s vlog and we would recommend them to all our friends and family! We had an amazing experience, but watch the vlog to see for yourself!
Have you been to Tequila before?
Do you even drink Tequila? Tell us your craziest memory of drinking Tequila in the comments, I’m sure this will be interesting!
If you’re going the bus route like we did, you can look up times and buy your tickets online here:
