Exploration on the site began in the late 1960s with Jabiluka 1 being discovered in 1971 and the much larger Jabiluka 2 discovered in 1973. The Jabiluka deposits were included in the group of Uranium deposits that were the subject of the Fox Enquiry. As a result of this enquiry, the Jabiluka mining lease and two others were created along with Kakadu National Park. Feasibility works into the development of the mine were well progressed at the time of the Australian federal election, 1983, which saw the Australian Labor Party take government. Under this government, an export licence for the Uranium was unlikely to have been granted and the project development was stopped. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd bought the deposit from Pancontinental and proceeded without background work. Upon the election of the Howard Liberal Government in 1996, the project was once again placed into development.

‘Incompetence’: Federal government shuts down Jabiluka uranium mine
Sky News host Andrew Bolt has criticised the federal government’s decision to close down the Jabiluka uranium mine in the Northern Territory with plans to turn the area into a tourism hub.
Mr Bolt questioned how the tourism hub would be funded with uranium mines closed and some of the park’s attractions often closed for cultural reasons.
“It's money from the clouds. The operators of the old ranger uranium mine that was near the town, they will pay for renovating 100-year-old worker houses in Jabiru,” he said.
“See what good a uranium mine can do, but with that mine now closed they'll soon pack and go away.
“That leaves the Northern Territory government, already up to its neck in debt … it’s now going to have to spend $135 million to make Jabiru a tourist town instead and of course, t...

Fight for Country
In 1998, over 5,000 people traveled to Kakadu, in the Northern Territory, to stand alongside the traditional owners of the land, the Mirrar people, and lend their support to the Jabiluka Campaign. The fight to prevent the development of the Jabiluka uranium mine was one of the biggest protest movements in Australia's history.
