How the Isle of Wight Festival (1969) got Bob Dylan (UK) - BBC News - 15th August 2019
(Edit) On this 50th anniversary, how in 1969, as Woodstock was being held, how Bob Dylan, who lived in 'Woodstock', was not there but at one of the UK's biggest music venues, at Wootton, in the 'Isle of Wight' Festival'. And how both Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festivals shared the same spirit of that time.
See below for the full report, on how he came to the Isle of Wight, why he came instead of Woodstock and what occurred there.
Isle of Wight Festival ran from 1968 - 1970 and again from -
2002 to present (this date at least).
The 1970 event apparently had 600,000 people turn up which was five times more than the entire population of the island itself.

NOTE: I'm sorry to say that the audio in this video had to be cut out due to copyright. The tracks were included for the first few weeks, but then it was blocked by YouTube and I was forced to silence "Maggie's Farm" and replace "She Belongs To Me" with another song from this concert that was not copyrighted. I thought about removing the video altogether but figured that footage without music is better than no footage at all. Still, I apologize for the annoyance. If you'd like to hear these tracks, this concert was released on Another Self Portrait which is available on all music streaming platforms.
This video includes most, if not all, of the existing color footage of Bob Dylan at the Isle of Wight Festival. It can be broken into three parts:
0:00 - Bob Dylan and his wife Sara walk through London Heathrow Airport on their way to the Isle of Wight. This is a fascinating piece because it’s a well-known clip used in No Direction Home, 60-Minutes, etc., but only black and white versions have been seen. I’m not sure where this clip originated from, but thanks to a generous Dylanologist (you know who you are), we now know that the footage we’ve seen all this time was probably from black & white transfers made for tv broadcasts. This seems to be a modern transfer of the original source film. A recording of "It Ain't Me, Babe" from this concert is playing in the background.
0:24 - Dylan gets up on stage with John Lennon, Ringo Star and George Harrison filmed in the audience.
0:48 - A clip of “Maggie’s Farm.”
1:19 - Footage of Dylan playing “She Belongs To Me.” Unfortunately, that track was copyrighted so I had to overdub the clip with “Wild Mountain Thyme”, the only traditional piece he performed that night. This version of "She Belongs To Me" can be heard on the official album Self Portrait (1970).
Fun fact! The following legends were in the audience:
John Lennon
George Harrison
Ringo Starr
Keith Richards
Syd Barrett
Elton John
Yoko Ono
Jane Fonda
Françoise Hardy
Eric Clapton
& others...
Love & Peace,

The Hunter
Trouble On Double Time
Songs Of Yesterday
The earliest remaining footage of Free (currently) is from the brief 13-minute performance by the group, prior to The Who playing, at the Isle Of Wight Festival on August 30th, 1969. This comes from a French documentary about the festival, where tiny snippets of Free performing are mixed in with footage of The Who, and from fan shot colour 8mm film. There is no original sound on either of these (from Free). Here these small clips of film have been used along with the full audio of the show, recorded by a fan in the field. Sound quality may not be the best, but it's pretty good, and this is the full show, as performed. It's excellent, and Free are on fire!
It's interesting to note that while material from the eponymous second LP (ILPS 9104) forms the bulk of this ludicrously short set, this is August - and that album, with it's iconic artwork by Ron Raffaelli, came out on October 24th!
The audio, and short amount of footage here is bulked out with images from the IOW Festival, the official programme, photographs, and other video of the crowd. It's all from this 1969 show. Make sure you look out for Jane Fonda (yes, it really is her, with husband, French film director Roger Vadim) in front of the stage, and the cameraman filming is also shown in some of the photographs here. My guess would be that all French footage was shot during 'The Hunter'.
Brilliant stuff. I hope you enjoy it.
