Islamic extremism has been defined as any form of Islam that opposes "democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs." Related terms include the ideology of Islamism (Political Islam), "radical Islam" and "Islamic supremacy".
Many oppose the use of term arguing it could "de-legitimize" the faith of Islam or suggest there is something wrong with some aspect of Islam.
Definition
A number of definitions have been offered for Islamic extremism, sometimes using overlapping but also distinct aspects of extreme interpretations and pursuits of Islamic ideology:
The use of violent tactics such as bombing and assassinations for achieving perceived Islamic goals; (see Jihadism (Zeyno Baran prefers the term Islamist extremism).
An extremely conservative view of Islam, which does not necessarily entail violence (see also Islamic fundamentalism; Zeyno Baran, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Eurasian Policy at the Hudson Institute, prefers the term Islamism). Key identifiers of the ideology may include:
a belief in the applicability of Sharia law in contemporary times,
the concept of belonging to a single Muslim community internationally (the umma),
belief in the legitimacy of jihad, or armed resistance, anywhere in the world, including armed resistance by Palestinians against the Israeli military, (or more sympathetically belief in "resisting attack and occupation through the use of force";
advocating a caliphate, i.e. a pan-Islamic state encompassing many countries.
Mali (i/ˈmɑːli/; French:[maˈli]), officially the Republic of Mali (French:République du Mali), is a landlocked country in West Africa. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa, with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres (480,000sqmi). The population of Mali is 14.5million. Its capital is Bamako. Mali consists of eight regions and its borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara Desert, while the country's southern part, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country's economy centers on agriculture and fishing. Some of Mali's prominent natural resources include gold, being the third largest producer of gold in the African continent, and salt. About half the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 (U.S.) a day. A majority of the population (55%) are non-denominational Muslims.
Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire (for which Mali is named), and the Songhai Empire. During its golden age, there was a flourishing of mathematics, astronomy, literature, and art. At its peak in 1300, the Mali Empire covered an area about twice the size of modern-day France and stretched to the west coast of Africa. In the late 19th century, during the Scramble for Africa, France seized control of Mali, making it a part of French Sudan. French Sudan (then known as the Sudanese Republic) joined with Senegal in 1959, achieving independence in 1960 as the Mali Federation. Shortly thereafter, following Senegal's withdrawal from the federation, the Sudanese Republic declared itself the independent Republic of Mali. After a long period of one-party rule, a coup in 1991 led to the writing of a new constitution and the establishment of Mali as a democratic, multi-party state.
Malič (Serbian Cyrillic: Малич) is a mountain in western Serbia, near the town of Ivanjica. Its highest peak has an elevation of 1,110meters above sea level.
T. R. Mahalingam, better known by his pen-name Mali, was an illustrator and cartoonist from Tamil Nadu, India, in the pre-independence era. He was the Tamil Press's first caricaturists, according to Chennai historian S. Muthiah in The Hindu. Muthiah has written elsewhere that Mali did as much with his strokes for Vikatan as its celebrated editor Kalki Krishnamurthy did with his words.
Mali published his drawings in the Indian Express in the 1930s, and first made his name at the Free Press Journal 'before being immortalised in the pages of Ananda Vikatan, the first popular Tamil periodical'. He also did cartoons for the Vikatan group's English-language Merry Magazine, where he became the editor in 1935. He is said to have left the editorial nitty-gritty to his assistant editor, while continuing to illustrate such humorous serials as 'Private Joyful in Madras' (The magazine shut down in c. 1935 or 1936).
While it was the writer and poet Subramanya Bharathi who first introduced cartoons to Tamil journalism, it was Ananda Vikatan that made them truly popular. As cartoonist and senior artist at Ananda Vikatan, Mali was thus a key influence on a second generation of cartoonists. Gopulu and Silpi were illustrators he mentored at Vikatan.

On November 20th 2015 Islamic extremists armed with guns and throwing grenades stormed the Radisson Blu hotel in Mali's capital, taking numerous hostages, authorities said.
Malian defence ministry spokesperson, Colonel Diarran Kone, confirmed three people had died.
He also said more than thirty people had been evacutaed from the building.
Malian troops, backed by special forces from America and France, reacted quickly.
As people ran for their lives near the luxury hotel along a dirt road, the soldiers in full combat gear pointed the way to safety.
Malian state TV reported that 80 people in the hotel when the assault began have been freed.
Freed hostages were taken to a nearby sports hall.
Malian special forces were freeing hostages "floor by floor," Malian army commander Modibo Nama Traore told The Associated Press.
Still, Rezidor Hotel, the Brussels-based group that operates the hotel, said hours after the assault began that 125 guests and 13 employees remained in the hotel.

Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said he's received full support from France and the international community after November 20th's hotel attack in Bamako that killed 20 people plus two assailants.
Speaking directly to journalists gathered outside the Radisson Blu hotel, Keita told them that Mali "cares about your lives and will do everything we can to protect them but everybody also has to be watchful".
Malian security forces were hunting "more than three" suspects, a military official said.
Malians awoke to a state of emergency after November 20th's attack in Bamako that was claimed by an extremist group formed by notorious Algerian militant Moktar Belmoktar.
The statement from the Al-Mourabitoun (The Sentinels) group was reported by the Al-Jazeera network and said the assault was in cooperation with al-Qaida's "Sahara Emirate."

STORYLINE:

Key identifiers of the ideology may include:
a belief in the applicability of Sharia law in contemporary times,
the concept of belonging to a single Muslim community internationally (the umma),
belief in the legitimacy of jihad, or armed resistance, anywhere in the world, including armed resistance by Palestinians against the Israeli military, (or more sympathetically belief in "resisting attack and occupation through the use of force";
advocating a caliphate, i.e. a pan-Islamic state encompassing many countries.
