Irena Sendler: Risking Her Life to Save Others
During World War II, Polish social worker Irena Sendler leveraged her vast network to smuggle food, medicine, and supplies into the Warsaw ghetto in German-occupied Poland—and smuggle Jewish children out. She relied on unconventional and dangerous methods to thwart the Nazis, including orchestrating the escape of infant Elżbieta Kopel (later Ficowska) in a small wooden box.
Nothing stopped Irena. She remained determined to save Jewish lives even after she was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death. Join us to commemorate Women’s History Month by honoring Irena Sendler’s life and legacy.

How one person saved over 2,000 children from the Nazis - Iseult Gillespie
Get to know the story of Irena Sendler, a social worker who saved over 2,000 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII.
--
In 1943, Irena Sendler and Janina Grabowska froze when they heard Gestapo pounding on the front door. Knowing she was minutes from arrest, Irena tossed Janina her most dangerous possession: a glass jar containing the names of over 2,000 Jewish children she’d smuggled to safety from the Warsaw Ghetto. Who was this courageous woman? Iseult Gillespie details the life and legacy of Irena Sendler.

Irena Sendler - One Minute History
Irena Sendler helped save 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. Born and raised in Poland, Sendler — a Catholic social worker — was 29 years old when the war began. Granted unique access due to her job in the welfare department, she helped smuggle children to safety — giving them new identities through forged documents. She even obtained a certificate as a disease inspector, which enabled her to regularly enter and leave the ghetto. In October of 1943, she was caught and arrested by Nazi forces. While she was sentenced to death, underground activists managed to bribe officials for her release. She continued a career in social work after the war and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 2007.
Irena Sendler passed away in 2008, though her legacy lives on.

IRENA SENDLER – Poland In
🇵🇱🇬🇧🇮🇱 “A glittering jewel in the crown of humanity” – this is how Irena Sendler née Krzyżanowska, was described by one of her lifetime friends, a Holocaust survivor, Lilli Pohlmann. Irena Sendler - a humanitarian, a social worker, and a nurse - during World War II saved over 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto, risking her life to save theirs. Having withstood torture by Germans, Irena Sendler never revealed details of her underground work nor where she hid the list with the addresses of children she had saved. To commemorate this silent humble hero, a Righteous Among the Nations, a monument has been unveiled in Newark-on-Trent. Glory and Praise to Irena Sendlerowa!
