Book Review on Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
In this video, I share my review of one of the best books I've read in 2020 by Italo Calvino called Invisible Cities. It's hard to describe. It's a travelogue but not of any cities that we know - and yet we do. There's no map and yet there is, in our heads and our hearts. As I was reading this book, I felt like I was reading a magical piece of artwork.

Rome's Invisible City
It may boast one of the most breathtaking cityscapes in the world, but beneath Italy’s capital lies a far less familiar Rome, its incredible secrets known only to a few.
Vast subterranean quarries, aqueducts and water cisterns, along with ornate temples and tombs, and the elaborate lifts, trap doors and clever mechanics beneath the Coliseum all number among the many wonders to be found deep underground.
Aided by state-of-the-art visualisation techniques and a team of experts, Dr Michael Scott tells the extraordinary story of one of the ancient world's most awe-inspiring creations, a testament to the ingenuity of the remarkable people who, long ago, built Rome’s invisible city and made it their home.

October - November, 2013
Union Station, Los Angeles, CA
Concept and direction: Yuval Sharon
Music and libretto: Christopher Cerrone
Conductor: Marc Lowenstein
Choreography: Danielle Agami and the L.A. Dance Project
Invisible Cities, set in LA’s historic Union Station, allowed the audience to roam freely through an operating train station, pursuing individual characters or creating their own story. The audience experienced the live performance via Sennheiser wireless headphones surrounded by the uninterrupted life of the station.
Based on Italo Calvino’s beloved novel, Invisible Cities is hauntingly adapted by composer Christopher Cerrone as a seventy-minute meditation on urban life, memory, and human connection. Cerrone’s fragile, quiet score attempts to capture “decaying sounds” through the use of found objects such as instruments and pre-recorded voices interweaving with live voices. For the world premiere, director Yuval Sharon immersed audiences in an unpredictable platform of everyday life, creating an “invisible” production that made each audience member the protagonist of the experience. With performers appearing and disappearing into the everyday fabric of the building, Sharon and choreographer Danielle Agami draw the audience into an uncannily intimate proximity to LA Dance Project and the singing ensemble.

Welcome to our channel! In this video, we invite you to explore the enchanting world of "Invisible Cities" by Italo Calvino as we present a mesmerizing summary of this literary masterpiece.
"Invisible Cities" is a unique and imaginative work that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. Written by the brilliant Italian author Italo Calvino, this novel is a poetic and philosophical exploration of cities, dreams, and human experiences.
Join us as we traverse the wondrous landscapes of Calvino's mind, following the conversations between the legendary explorer Marco Polo and the emperor Kublai Khan. Through Polo's captivating tales, we encounter a series of mesmerizing cities, each one distinct and hidden from the eyes of the ordinary world.
In these invisible cities, we encounter extraordinary architecture, surreal settings, and intriguing inhabitants. Calvino weaves a tapestry of cities that mirror the complexities of human desires, memories, and aspirations. Each city reflects a facet of human existence and offers profound insights into the human condition.
The novel's dream-like narrative challenges our perceptions of reality and invites us to question the nature of our own cities and the invisible aspects that shape our lives. As we journey through these imaginary urban landscapes, we contemplate the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible, the seen and the unseen.
Prepare to be captivated by Calvino's lyrical prose, as he masterfully constructs a poetic labyrinth of thoughts and emotions. "Invisible Cities" is not just a book; it is a profound meditation on life, art, and the intricacies of the human soul.
