Intertropical Convergence Zone
The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), known by sailors as the doldrums, is the area encircling the earth near the equator where the northeast and southeast trade winds come together.
The ITCZ was originally identified from the 1920s to the 1940s as the "Intertropical Front" (ITF), but after the recognition in the 1940s and 1950s of the significance of wind field convergence in tropical weather production, the term "ITCZ" was then applied. When it lies near the equator, it is called the near-equatorial trough. Where the ITCZ is drawn into and merges with a monsoonal circulation, it is sometimes referred to as a monsoon trough, a usage more common in Australia and parts of Asia. In the seamen's speech the zone is referred to as the doldrums because of its erratic weather patterns with stagnant calms and violent thunderstorms.
The ITCZ appears as a band of clouds, usually thunderstorms, that circle the globe near the equator. In the Northern Hemisphere, the trade winds move in a southwestern direction from the northeast, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they move northwestward from the southeast. When the ITCZ is positioned north or south of the equator, these directions change according to the Coriolis effect imparted by the rotation of the earth. For instance, when the ITCZ is situated north of the equator, the southeast trade wind changes to a southwest wind as it crosses the equator. The ITCZ is formed by vertical motion largely appearing as convective activity of thunderstorms driven by solar heating, which effectively draw air in; these are the trade winds. The ITCZ is effectively a tracer of the ascending branch of the Hadley cell, and is wet. The dry descending branch is the horse latitudes.

Convergence zone
A convergence zone in meteorology is a region in the atmosphere where two prevailing flows meet and interact, usually resulting in distinctive weather conditions. This create a mass accumulation that eventually leads to a vertical movement and the formation of clouds and precipitation. Large scale convergence, called synoptic scale convergence, provides weather systems such as baroclinic troughs, low-pressure areas, and cyclones . Small scale convergence will give from isolated cumulus clouds to large areas of thunderstorms. The inverse of the convergence is the divergence.
Large scale
An example of a convergence zone is the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a low pressure area which girdles the Earth at the Equator. Another example is the South Pacific convergence zone that extends from the western Pacific Ocean toward French Polynesia.
Mesoscale
Convergence zones also occur at a smaller scale. Some examples are the Puget Sound Convergence Zone which occurs in the Puget Sound region in the U.S. state of Washington; Mohawk–Hudson convergence in the U.S. state of New York; the Brown Willy effect which can be generated when south-westerly winds blow over Bodmin Moor in Cornwall; and the Pembrokeshire Dangler which can form when northerly winds blow down the Irish Sea. They can also be associated with sea breeze fronts.

At the 21th of December, the tropic of Capricorn, a latitude circle 23,5 degrees South of the equator, receives most energy. At the Northern Hemisphire, this is called the winter solstice. Half a year later, at the 21th of June, the sun gives te most energy to the tropic of Cancer, a latitude circle 23,5 degrees North of the Equator, causing the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The energy which is received from the sun causes a low-pressure area. This low-pressure area, around the equator, is called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, or the ITCZ. Because the energy of the sun varies per season, so does the exact location of the ITCZ, causing a precipitation pattern between the tropic of Capricorn and the tropic of Cancer, where rain and dry seasons exist.
Let’s start investigating this pattern around the equator. The low-pressure area causes it to rain. Now it’s becoming June, when the Sun is high at the sky at the tropic of cancer. The ITCZ is moving along with the sun’s heat to the north, and there will be a rain season north of the equator. Keep in mind that the low-pressure area in the region south of the equator is absent, causing a dry season. After June, the ITCZ is moving south, along with the Sun. The rain season north of the equator ends, while the rain season in the area south of the equator begins. In December the sun gives the most energy to the tropic of Capricorn, which causes the ITCZ moving along south of the equator which will start the rain season. Because of the movement of the ITCZ, the rain and dry seasons exist!
The equator will almost always be influenced by the ITCZ, causing it to rain. So at the equator, there will be no dry season. According to the Climate System of Köppen, these are Af Climates: Warm and moist.
North of the equator it rains in july, and It’s dry in December, which makes it an Aw climate: Warm and dry in the winter months.
South of the equator it rains in December and it’s dry in June. Because it’s warm in December and January this is called summer in the southern hemisphere. De seasons are turned around with the northern hemisphere. So, June and July are the winter months in the southern hemisphere. The drought in June and July in the Southern hemisphere, is also a winter drought. So, also in these regions, there is an Aw-climate: Warm and dry in the wintermonts.

Near the equator, trade winds of the Northern and Southern hemispheres converge. In this region, strong sun and warm water heats the air, raising humidity and making the air more buoyant. This region where this occurs is called the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the Doldrums by sailors.
Referred to as the doldrums because of the relatively windless ocean surface, the ITCZ, or “itch”, circles the Earth, and appears as a band of clouds consisting of showers, with occasional thunderstorms. This band of clouds may extend for hundreds of miles and can be broken into smaller line segments.
These clouds and storms develop from the convergence of the trade winds aiding the buoyant air to rise. The rising air expands and cools, releasing the accumulated moisture in an almost perpetual series of thunderstorms. These storms can be short lived but can produce heavy rainfall. It’s estimated that 40% of all tropical rainfall rates exceed one inch per hour.
The ITCZ follows the sun, it moves north in the Northern Hemisphere summer and south in the Northern Hemisphere winter, which results in the wet and dry seasons of the tropics rather than the cold and warm seasons of higher latitudes.
The sun crosses the equator twice a year during the equinoxes, causing two wet seasons each year. During the winter and summer solstice, the tropics have their two dry seasons, when the sun is more north or south of the equator.
Further from the equator, the two wet seasons merge into one, and the climate becomes more monsoonal, with one wet season and one dry season. In other video’s I’ve demonstrated that on average the region around the equator receives the most energy of the sun. This causes the surface to warm, which leads to the air to expand, which makes it lighter and rises, causing a low-pressure area. Because the earth’s axis is tilted, the energy of the sun isn’t directed to the equator every month. At the 21th of December, the tropic of Capricorn, a latitude circle 23,5 degrees South of the equator, receives most energy. At the Northern Hemisphire, this is called the winter solstice. Half a year later, at the 21th of June, the sun gives te most energy to the tropic of Cancer, a latitude circle 23,5 degrees North of the Equator, causing the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Although there is a huge variety per season, on average per year, the equator recies most energy.
The energy which is received from the sun causes a low-pressure area. This low-pressure area, around the equator, is called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, or the ITCZ. Because the energy of the sun varies per season, so does the exact location of the ITCZ, causing a precipitation pattern between the tropic of Capricorn and the tropic of Cancer, where rain and dry seasons exist.
Let’s start investigating this pattern around the equator. The low-pressure area causes it to rain. Now it’s becoming June, when the Sun is high at the sky at the tropic of cancer. The ITCZ is moving along with the sun’s heat to the north, and there will be a rain season north of the equator. Keep in mind that the low-pressure area in the region south of the equator is absent, causing a dry season. After June, the ITCZ is moving south, along with the Sun. The rain season north of the equator ends, while the rain season in the area south of the equator begins. In December the sun gives the most energy to the tropic of Capricorn, which causes the ITCZ moving along south of the equator which will start the rain season. Because of the movement of the ITCZ, the rain and dry seasons exist!
The equator will almost always be influenced by the ITCZ, causing it to rain. So at the equator, there will be no dry season. According to the Climate System of Köppen, these are Af Climates: Warm and moist.
North of the equator it rains in july, and It’s dry in December, which makes it an Aw climate: Warm and dry in the winter months.
South of the equator it rains in December and it’s dry in June. Because it’s warm in December and January this is called summer in the southern hemisphere. De seasons are turned around with the northern hemisphere. So, June and July are the winter months in the southern hemisphere. The drought in June and July in the Southern hemisphere, is also a winter drought. So, also in these regions, there is an Aw-climate: Warm and dry in the wintermonts.
Remark that a so-calles Aso-climate, where the summer is dry, is very rare, because the area’s around the equator are warm in the summer, causing a low-pressure area, which causes it to rain.

Near the equator, trade winds of the Northern and Southern hemispheres converge. In this region, strong sun and warm water heats the air, raising humidity and making the air more buoyant. This region where this occurs is called the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the Doldrums by sailors.
Referred to as the doldrums because of the relatively windless ocean surface, the ITCZ, or “itch”, circles the Earth, and appears as a band of clouds consisting of showers, with occasional thunderstorms. This band of clouds may extend for hundreds of miles and can be broken into smaller line segments.
These clouds and storms develop from the convergence of the trade winds aiding the buoyant air to rise. The rising air expands and cools, releasing the accumulated moisture in an almost perpetual series of thunderstorms. These storms can be short lived but can produce heavy rainfall. It’s estimated that 40% of all tropical rainfall rates exceed one inch per hour.
The ITCZ follows the sun, it moves north in the Northern Hemisphere summer and south in the Northern Hemisphere winter, which results in the wet and dry seasons of the tropics rather than the cold and warm seasons of higher latitudes.
The sun crosses the equator twice a year during the equinoxes, causing two wet seasons each year. During the winter and summer solstice, the tropics have their two dry seasons, when the sun is more north or south of the equator.
Further from the equator, the two wet seasons merge into one, and the climate becomes more monsoonal, with one wet season and one dry season. In the Northern Hemisphere, the wet season is from May to July, and in the Southern Hemisphere from November to February. Next week, we’ll explore Tropical Cyclones.

Intertropical Convergence Zone
The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), known by sailors as the doldrums, is the area encircling the earth near the equator where the northeast and southeast trade winds come together.
The ITCZ was originally identified from the 1920s to the 1940s as the "Intertropical Front" (ITF), but after the recognition in the 1940s and 1950s of the significance of wind field convergence in tropical weather production, the term "ITCZ" was then applied. When it lies near the equator, it is called the near-equatorial trough. Where the ITCZ is drawn into and merges with a monsoonal circulation, it is sometimes referred to as a monsoon trough, a usage more common in Australia and parts of Asia. In the seamen's speech the zone is referred to as the doldrums because of its erratic weather patterns with stagnant calms and violent thunderstorms.
The ITCZ appears as a band of clouds, usually thunderstorms, that circle the globe near the equator. In the Northern Hemisphere, the trade winds move in a southwestern direction from the northeast, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they move northwestward from the southeast. When the ITCZ is positioned north or south of the equator, these directions change according to the Coriolis effect imparted by the rotation of the earth. For instance, when the ITCZ is situated north of the equator, the southeast trade wind changes to a southwest wind as it crosses the equator. The ITCZ is formed by vertical motion largely appearing as convective activity of thunderstorms driven by solar heating, which effectively draw air in; these are the trade winds. The ITCZ is effectively a tracer of the ascending branch of the Hadley cell, and is wet. The dry descending branch is the horse latitudes.
