As a result of the rain, besides qualifying being canceled, many of the track's parking lots were flooded. Track owner Eddie Gossage received help from the Texas Department of Transportation, which closed down a portion of Texas State Highway 170 to use it as a parking lot. Although the parking lot issue was solved, traffic concerns arose, and on race day, by 8 AM, traffic on Interstate 35W stopped 16 miles south of the track. Due to the traffic, pianist Van Cliburn, who was scheduled to perform the national anthem at the race, had his helicopter delayed and could not perform.
The first two runnings of the race were controversial, crash-strewn affairs, with universal criticism that the track's design was one groove; Kenny Wallace argued, "They're so busy building condos they don't have time to fix the racetrack."
There were 10 different winners in the first ten races, the longest such streak for any NASCAR track in the Sprint Cup Series. This list includes Texas Native Terry Labonte, who won in 1999, and Dale Earnhardt Jr winning his first race in 2000. Jeff Burton, the winner of the inaugural race, broke that streak by getting his second Texas win in a last lap pass in 2007. In 2011, the race became a Saturday night event, whereas before it was always a Sunday afternoon race. This was done since the night race at Phoenix was moved to February and became a day race. The 2011 race was run on April 9, 2011 and was the first scheduled night race of the season, and in Texas Motor Speedway history for the Cup Series.
Interstate Battery System of America, Inc., a.k.a. Interstate Batteries, is a privately owned company that markets automotive batteries manufactured by Johnson Controls through independent distributors. The company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and it also markets marine/RV, motorcycle, lawn and garden, and other lines of batteries in the starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) markets. Interstate Batteries operates a distributor network that supplies batteries and power solutions to over 200,000 dealers. They also have distributors in Australia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, and Panama, with more foreign distributors planned. Additionally, they operate over 200 corporate and franchise owned retail stores.
History
In the spring of 1950, John Searcy began selling and delivering car batteries to wholesalers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area from the back of his red Studebaker pickup truck. After two years, Searcy founded his new company, naming it Interstate Battery System after the new interstate highway system being built across the U.S.
Larry receives a call from Mike. Mike asks about why interstate batteries are no longer recommended by Larry. Larry says that interstate batteries quality back in the day was great however, they shifted to mass producing cheaper batteries at Costco and has lost the initial quality that made them so great.

What is the memory effect? It's when a rechargeable battery seems to lose some of its staying power. Batteries don't really have a memory, but we explain what's really happening inside your nickel-cadmium (NiCd) or nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery. We also tell you how to avoid the memory effect and how to properly charge your reusable batteries.

So, you’ve got an Interstate Battery under your hood.
Good choice.
And now you want to know if you’re covered under warranty.
You’re in the right place.
In this video we’ll help you look up your purchase date so you can see if your battery’s covered under warranty.
Ready? Let’s get started.
The best and easiest way is to check the date on your purchase receipt.
Often dealers will give you warranty information when you purchase the battery and you may want to put this in your glove compartment.
If you still have your receipt, look at the purchase date. Then cross reference it with Interstatebatteries.com/warranty to see if your battery is covered.
If you don’t have this paperwork, you can still find out the information on the battery itself.
Make sure you’ve got all the proper safety equipment then open up the hood.
Locate your battery. On top you should a product information label. This label includes date codes that most dealers will punch out or rip off to highlight the purchase date.
As you can see, this battery was purchased in February of 2022, so we can check on Interstatebatteries.com/warranty to see if it’s covered.
If your battery’s purchase label is not marked, look for this small sticker called a date dot.
Depending on the warehouse, this sticker will likely be on the top or side of the battery. If you can’t see it on top, you may need to remove your battery from your car. If you already know how to do that, skip ahead to this time code.
If you don’t know how to remove your battery, follow these steps.
You’ll need: safety equipment including gloves and eye protection, and a wrench or ratchet.
First, remove any metal or plastic pieces holding your battery in place. This can be a bar over the middle of the battery or a wedge at the base. This differs greatly by vehicle manufacturer and model.
Next, you’ll loosen the nut on the negative terminal. Once loose, remove the cable and place it safely away from the terminal. Then, loosen the nut on the positive terminal. Remove this cable and place it away from the terminal.
Make sure there are no obstructions while you lift your battery out of the car and be prepared. These things are heavy.
So, you’ve got your battery out of your car. Let’s find that date dot. And on this battery, it’s on the side.
This 3-4 digit code represents the date that the battery left the warehouse to deliver to the dealer.
Sometimes you’ll purchase your battery a month or two after the dealer receives it from the warehouse.
In this case, that date dot might not represent your purchase date, but it’ll give you a pretty good idea of when you bought it and your dealer should honor that date if it’s within your warranty period.
Now, in the rare case that you don’t have your receipt, the product label date is not marked, and you can’t find your date dot, then you want to look for the thermal heat stamp.
This is a code that has been stamped onto the plastic of the battery by the manufacturer. Usually, it’s on the back of the battery directly below the top, but it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Once you locate this code, the dating can be a little bit tricky. Take a look at the first two letters of the heat stamped code.
Great. This chart shows you how to use those two letters to figure out the date.
Like the date dot, remember this does not represent when you purchased the battery, but the date it was manufactured. Check if this date is under warranty and bring it to your dealer if it is.
That’s it! Putting your battery back in is in reverse order of how you took it out. Safety gear on, connect the positive terminal and tighten the nut. Then connect the negative terminal and tighten that nut. And remember, replace the pieces holding the battery in place.
Viola! Now you know how to look up purchase date, warehouse shipping dates, and manufacturer date codes for your battery. With that information, you can figure out if your battery is under warranty.
And if you do need help, visit your local Interstate Batteries dealer, contact our Consumer Affairs team or send us a message on social media.

Larry receives a call from Mike. Mike asks about why interstate batteries are no longer recommended by Larry. Larry says that interstate batteries quality back in the day was great however, they shifted to mass producing cheaper batteries at Costco and has lost the initial quality that made them so great.

AGM or EFB? Not sure which type of enhanced battery your customers need? Watch this one-hour educational webinar with our certified battery experts to take a closer look at the inside of an absorbed glass-mat battery (AGM) and enhanced flooded battery (EFB) to discover the differences between the two battery chemistries. Jeff Barron and Gale Kimbrough from the Interstate ProClinic team explain how today’s vehicles require a different type of battery technology to keep them moving. Our battery professionals look at what makes EFBs and AGMs different from a traditional flooded battery and why Interstate has the advanced battery chemistries that auto technicians prefer.

Finding out if your battery is still under warranty can be confusing. In this video, we break it down for with 4 easy ways to check on your warranty – even if you don’t have the receipt.
0:00 Look Up Battery Warranty Date
0:18 Purchase Receipt
0:52 Punch Out Label
1:13 Date Dot Sticker
2:43 Thermal Heat Stamp
Transcript:
