When are you "Established" on an Instrument Approach | Instrument Approach Clearances | 91.175
What does it mean to be "established" on an approach? Unfortunately, the definition is a bit fuzzy, but we can use some best practices to help us plan for a stable descent on an instrument approach.

How to Fly an ILS Approach | Glideslope Intercept | Approach Clearance
Here's a relatively basic ILS approach at Baltimore to look at how this approach is flown. One area of confusion is in where exactly to intercept the glideslope on the approach. The approach plate makes the glideslope intercept clear with the thunderbolt symbol, but the AIM provides a bit of leeway in intercepting early, with a good amount of caveats. Let's explore this, as well as typical ways we receive our approach clearance from ATC.

First Instrument approach in IMC at night, to minimums!
My CFI, Matt, with PrecisionAire Aviation (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoEnvcgRMQHxCotv9W0QczA ) and I decided to take advantage of the less than ideal weather to practice some approaches. Looking at the map, KDBQ, Dubuque had the worst forecast, so that is where we went! This wasn't my first time in actual IMC at night, but the first time shooting an approach through it!
We setup for the VOR rwy 31 approach and encountered ceiling down to minimums! After a short hold however, the weather changed for the better!
Enjoy the many nuggets of wisdom Matt adds, especially on the Garmin G530, and see me poorly fly an airplane. Still getting a feel for audio recording so bare with me!

An introduction to how the Instrument Landing System (ILS) works. When visibility is too poor to allow for a visual approach to a runway, aircraft use instruments to detect radio signals aligning them with the centerline and proper approach path.

The oldest and still most precise form of instrument approach is the ILS. It involves a glideslope antenna, transmitting a signal giving the aircraft vertical guidance, and a localizer, giving lateral guidance. It can also provide distance information using marker beacons. By following these signals, aircraft can descend to almost the runway threshold before gaining visual sight of the field for landing.
Here's a basic explanation of the Instrument Landing System, using an example approach at Sioux Falls, IA.
