Instone Air Line was an early British airline from 1919 to 1924. Along with other private airlines of the time, it was absorbed into Imperial Airways.
History
S. Instone & Company Limited, a shipping company set up by Sir Samuel Instone, had operated a private service from Cardiff via London (Hounslow Heath Aerodrome) to Paris - Le Bourget Airport since 1919. In April 1920 it ran the service between London and Paris as a public service using the name Instone Air Line. In 1920 it was the first airline to transport a racehorse and on 1 January 1922 the company introduced uniforms to its pilots and staff; Instone are believed to be the first airline to do so. It started a London to Cologne - Butzweilerhof Airport service in May 1922. It stopped operating the London-Paris route in October 1922 due to competition. In 1923, a Government committee recommended that the main British airlines should merge, to establish one, financially strong, airline, and to enable it to undertake the necessary expansions. Following this recommendation, Imperial Airways was created on 1 April 1924, absorbing the assets and routes of Handley Page Transport, Instone Air Line, Daimler Airway and British Marine Air Navigation Co Ltd.
An air line is a tube, or hose, that carries a compressed air supply, e.g. to inflate tyres or power compressed-air tools. Air line is most commonly used for supplying compressed air to air tools in workshops and in road vehicle air brake or railway air brake systems on larger vehicles or rail cars. The most common sizes of air tubing are one quarter inch and three eights inch outside diameter tubing although a complete range of tubing in both standard and metric sizes is available. Air lines are also used for diving where s compressor or a hand-powered air pump supplies air to a diver.
Formerly, a synonym for beeline, or the shortest path between two land points regardless of obstacle. As defined by a 1913 dictionary: "Air line, a straight line; a bee line. Hence Air-line, adj.; as, air-line road."
The third series of this extremely popular television docusoap follows the high-flying life of working for the airline easyJet. We continue to look at the lives and characters we met in the second series and meet some new ones along the way.

According to Airways Magazine, Instone Air Line, which would eventually become the British Airways we know today, designed military-inspired uniforms using pretty much any garment that was available, and they were fit to the male figure.
The new uniforms adopted a 'nipped and tucked' waist line to reflection the courtiers of Paris... In 1924Imperial Airways was created as the government's 'chosen instrument of air travel' by the amalgamation of The Instone Air LineLtd.
