The plot concerns actors and directors in the early 1930s who were unable to make the transition from silent films to talkies, and thus turned to making pornography. The film's title takes its name from the double meaning that "insert" both refers to a film technique and sexual intercourse. Inserts was filmed like a stage play on one set and filmed entirely in real time.
Plot
Prior to the opening credits we see portions of the stag film that is shot in the course of the movie. Voices are overheard that make it apparent that men and women are watching this in the present day. At the end a man complains that there was no "Come shot", something that will later develop into a plot point.
The story takes place in Hollywood in the early 1930s, shortly after the start of the talkie period. A visionary and gifted young Hollywood director known as Boy Wonder (Dreyfuss) has fallen out of favor with the studios. This is ostensibly due to his reluctance to lower his standards or abandon his artistic and experimental style (such as using a hand-held camera) for the sake of churning out lesser quality stag films for easy money, due to his alcoholism and his fear of leaving his house. He works out of his decaying mansion, which is the only one left on a street being turned into a freeway.
Film was a Yugoslavrockgroup founded in 1978 in Zagreb. Film was one of the most popular rock groups of the former Yugoslav new wave in the late 1970s to early 1980s.
History
New wave years (1979-1981)
During 1977 and 1978, bassist Marino Pelajić, guitarist Mladen Jurčić, and drummer Branko Hromatko were Azra members when Branimir "Johnny" Štulić brought Jura Stublić as the new vocalist. Stublić was to become Aerodrom member, but due to his deep vocals it never happened. The lineup functioned for a few months only and after a quarrel with Štulić, on early 1979, Pelajić, Jurčić, Hromatko and Stublić formed the band Šporko Šalaporko i Negove Žaluzine, naming the band after a story from the "Polet" youth magazine, which was soon after renamed to Film. The memories of the Azra lineup later inspired Štulić to write the song "Roll over Jura" released on Filigranski pločnici in 1982.
Saxophonist Jurij Novoselić, who at the time had worked under the pseudonym Kuzma Videosex, joined the band, inspiring others to use pseudonym instead of their original names: vocalist Stublić became Jura Jupiter, bassist Pelajić became Mario Baraccuda and guitarist Jurčić became Max Wilson. Before joining the band, Stublić did not have much experience as a vocalist, however, since his father had been an opera singer, he often visited the theatre and opera, and at the age of 13, he started playing the guitar, earning money as a street performer at seaside resorts.
Film is a 1965 film written by Samuel Beckett, his only screenplay. It was commissioned by Barney Rosset of Grove Press. Writing began on 5 April 1963 with a first draft completed within four days. A second draft was produced by 22 May and a forty-leaf shooting script followed thereafter. It was filmed in New York in July 1964.
Beckett’s original choice for the lead – referred to only as “O” – was Charlie Chaplin, but his script never reached him. Both Beckett and the director Alan Schneider were interested in Zero Mostel and Jack MacGowran. However, the former was unavailable and the latter, who accepted at first, became unavailable due to his role in a "Hollywood epic." Beckett then suggested Buster Keaton. Schneider promptly flew to Los Angeles and persuaded Keaton to accept the role along with "a handsome fee for less than three weeks' work."James Karen, who was to have a small part in the film, also encouraged Schneider to contact Keaton.
The filmed version differs from Beckett's original script but with his approval since he was on set all the time, this being his only visit to the United States. The script printed in Collected Shorter Plays of Samuel Beckett (Faber and Faber, 1984) states:

an edit i made of jessica harper as miss cathy cake in inserts 1975/1976! i really wish this movie would've gotten the R rating they were shooting for and more people wouldve talked about it because it does have its downfalls but i like it! even beyond jessica harper's boobs! i think it does a good job of telling a story and i thought it was digestible and i like how much they do in just one room with just 5 characters! i can totally see where people say it'd have been more fitting as a stage play though, and that the writing tends to suck its own dick, for lack of a better phrase lmfao.

Say what you will about Inserts, John Byrum's 1975 film about a director reduced to manufacturing porn in his own living room—Richard Dreyfuss, Jessica Harper and Veronica Cartwright, give it their all and then some. Harper plays a doe-eyed schemer not as innocent as she looks, and Cartwright, as usual, nearly steals the show as an addict who subsidizes her habit with sex. Playing a low-life producer/pimp, Bob Hoskins gives the film a jolt.

Give your viewer more insight with an Insert Shot ►► http://bit.ly/2KiB4n8
An “insert shot” (AKA “insert”) is a shot that focuses on a specific detail within a scene.
Inserts often involve an object or set of objects, often from a character's POV, but you can film inserts many different ways.
In some cases, they can be filmed with a body double or even the second unit.
Inserts are not one size fits all despite having such a general label.
In this video, we’re going to analyze how to write, film, and edit insert shots by breaking down a number of important inserts in one of the greatest films of all time, The Big Lebowski, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Coen brother movies are so good we tend to forget how they do the little thing really well, and one of those simple things is the insert shot. We go over some important principles you need to keep in mind when planning, filming, and cutting your insert shots.
They are:
Composition
Color
Time
Understanding how to craft inserts using these three aspects will allow you to build scenes more effectively because important scene details will be shown in a way that provides both clarity and an emotional context for how the information needs to be received.
Insert shots may seem like a simple, quick thing you blaze through on set - but they are just as important as any other shot you will get. Don’t underestimate them.
After you watch this video, you will have a better idea on how to go about planning, filming, and using your insert shots in your next film or project - just like the Coen brothers.
