Inkjet printing is a type of computer printing that recreates a digital image by propelling droplets of ink onto paper, plastic, or other substrates. Inkjet printers are the most commonly used type of printer, and range from small inexpensive consumer models to expensive professional machines.
The concept of inkjet printing originated in the 20th century, and the technology was first extensively developed in the early 1950s. Starting in the late 1970s inkjet printers that could reproduce digital images generated by computers were developed, mainly by Epson, Hewlett-Packard (HP), and Canon. In the worldwide consumer market, four manufacturers account for the majority of inkjet printer sales: Canon, HP, Epson, and Lexmark, a 1991 spin-off from IBM.
The emerging ink jet material deposition market also uses inkjet technologies, typically printheads using piezoelectric crystals, to deposit materials directly on substrates.
There are two main technologies in use in contemporary inkjet printers: continuous (CIJ) and Drop-on-demand (DOD).

Inkjet Printing Process Explainer Animation • Direct and on The Fly Print
Explainer animation of an industrial inkjet process where a product is printed using two (2) colors. Two inkjet printing methods are shown, “on the fly” print where the print is applied directly on a specific area. The other method is rotational printing where the print is applied on the full circumference (360°) of the product.
With the “on the fly” print methods the print can be applied very quickly but can only cover a specific area of the product. When more area has to be printed additional print heads are needed and the product needs to be rotated to present the next part. Between the print steps, the ink needs to be hardened to ensure it stays in place (called curing). This is a quick methods to apply print on a product.

Inkjet printing
Inkjet printing is an AM technology which only adds material when and where it is needed. It therefore, minimizes waste and makes it ideal for handling expensive materials. This film explains the technology behind piezoelectric inkjet printing at the University of Sheffield and how it can be applied to many areas of research. For example: in tissue engineering, inkjet printing can help to find ways to treat wounds more effectively; in carbon fibre composites, their properties can be improved by strategically placing beneficial additives and in crime applications, unique markings can be produced that can help combat crime.

The Engineering of Droplets and their Formation in a Commercial Inkjet Printer
Bill describes how the minimization of surface area and inertia compete to form droplets. He then shows how engineers use this knowledge to create precisely-sized droplets in a commercial inkjet printer -- the type used to print expiration dates on food packages.

The animation shows both methods and the curing methods. The animation is part of a larger explainer animation covering industrial and technical inkjet printing.
