An infill station (sometimes in-fill station) is
a train station built on an existing passenger rail, rapid transit, or light rail line to address demand in a location between existing stations. Such stations take advantage of existing train service and encourage new riders by providing a more convenient location. Many older transit systems have widely spaced stations and can benefit from infill stations. In some cases, new infill station are built at sites where a station had once existed many years ago, for example the Cermak–McCormick Place station on the Chicago Green Line.

Infill Stations & Why Urban Golf Courses Make Great TODs
Today I visit the site of a future infill RTD station on the D Line, as well as the golf course next door, both called Overland. In this video I explain the potential of the site and use it as an example of how cities across North America could develop underutilized urban land into dense, transit-oriented neighborhoods.

There's a catch | New MARTA infill Stations
Mayor Andre Dickens has just dropped a bombshell announcement for Atlanta’s public transit - four new in-fill MARTA stations are coming to town! After a 24-year hiatus, MARTA is expanding its reach to key areas along the Beltline, promising to bridge the gaps and make the system more accessible for everyone.
The Locations:
Murphy Crossings: Nestled in the bustling Beltline development, this station will connect the Red and Gold lines, offering a vital link to the surrounding TOD.
Krog Street/Hulsey Yard: Strategically placed to serve the east side Beltline, reducing the detour for the future Beltline LRT.
Joseph E. Boone: A western addition that ties into the Bankhead extension, enhancing connectivity.

Joseph E. Boone: A western addition that ties into the Bankhead extension, enhancing connectivity.
Armour MARTA Rail Yard: Positioned to streamline the Beltline LRT’s route, making transit trips shorter and sweeter.
The Investment: With a $400 million price tag, these stations are a significant investment in Atlanta’s future. The federal government is expected to cover half, while local funding, including the More MARTA Atlanta sales tax, TAD, and developer contributions, will take care of the rest.
The Controversy: But wait, there’s more! The mayor has hinted at a six-year timeline for construction, yet the form of transportation for the Beltline remains uncertain. Will it be traditional rail, autonomous pods, or bus rapid transit? Amidst these discussions, we question the viability of ‘Gadgetbahn’ solutions that promise innovation but may fall short in practice.
The Reality Check: Atlanta needs a robust transit system that can handle its growing demands. As we’ve seen with examples like the Vegas Loop, not all that glitters is gold. It’s time to focus on high-capacity, high-frequency, and reliable solutions that truly serve the community.

Making commuter rail useful as urban rail requires making sure there are enough stations for urban use. On lines without such stations, what are some attractive places to build new infill stations?

An infill station (sometimes in-fill station) is
a train station built on an existing passenger rail, rapid transit, or light rail line to address demand in a location between existing stations. Such stations take advantage of existing train service and encourage new riders by providing a more convenient location. Many older transit systems have widely spaced stations and can benefit from infill stations. In some cases, new infill station are built at sites where a station had once existed many years ago, for example the Cermak–McCormick Place station on the Chicago Green Line.
