(1 Sep 1999) Indonesian/Nat
Megawati Sukarnoputri, widely expected to be Indonesia's next president, urged East Timor's warring factions to avoid any more post-referendum violence Wednesday.
It was Megawati's first public comment on the U-N sponsored vote that's widely expected to lead to independence for the impoverished territory.
Pro-Jakarta militiamen have been roaming at will across East Timor, terrorising those favouring a break from Indonesia and harassing foreigners on hand for the vote that took place Monday.
Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle won the largest number of votes in the June national elections.
She is widely picked to become the new president when political party leaders meet in November.
She had criticized Monday's referendum as being premature, but has promised to abide by the outcome if she takes office.
A 700-member national assembly must approve the referendum results, after the new presidential term begins.
Megawati said the East Timorese must be made "aware of their rights" within a democratic framework.
The East Timorese people were allowed to choose to remain within Indonesia under autonomous status, or to become independent.
The results will be announced next week.
Megawati is the eldest daughter of the late President Sukarno.
SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian)
"East Timor is one of our provinces, the youngest part of Indonesia. I want it to remain the 27th province of Indonesia. But right now, like I've already tried to do, I think whatever happens there, there should be no violence and no manipulation from any side."
SUPER CAPTION: Megawati Sukarnoputri, Leader of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian)
"As far as I am concerned so many sides want to enforce their will in East Timor. This is something we must prevent because it will inhibit the democratic process."

Indonesia's first election in 15 years has been underway, regardless of the rain dampening polling booths.
Almost 205 million eligible voters will choose a new president to lead the world's third-largest democracy, marking the fifth presidential and legislative elections since shaking off a dictatorship in 1998.
The presidential election will determine who will succeed President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, who is serving his second and final term.
Set up to be a three-way race among current Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and two former governors, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, if none of the candidates secure more than 50% of the votes in the first round, a runoff between the top two is scheduled for June 26.
Southeast Asia Correspondent Amanda Hodge is on the grounds in Jakarta, as the votes come in.
