The Sepoy Uprising, which took place in India in 1857 - 58, is seen as one of the most shocking insurrections to take place against a colonial power during the 19th century. Although the uprising was ultimately unsuccessful, it fundamentally changed the nature of British rule in the subcontinent and is sometimes known, in India, as the First War of Independence.

What Led To The Indian Rebellion Of 1857 And Why It Failed | Sepoy Mutiny | Indian Revolt of 1857| Full Documentary
The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, also known as the Indian Rebellion or First War of Indian Independence, was a significant uprising against British colonial rule in India. The rebellion was sparked by various factors, including resentment among Indian sepoys (Indian soldiers in the British East India Company's army) over cultural insensitivities and the introduction of new rifle cartridges that were rumored to be greased with animal fat, which offended both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. The rebellion spread to various regions, resulting in a violent and prolonged conflict that ultimately led to the British government taking direct control of India from the East India Company.

Welcome to my first talk in a series on the Sepoy Mutiny in India in 1857-58.
In this particular episode, we will explore at why and how the rebellion broke out.
I will follow up in the coming weeks with the war itself: the siege and storming of Delhi, the massacre at Cawnpore, the siege of Lucknow, and the Indian warrior queen, the Rani of Jahnsi.
Along the way I will also cover the savagery conducted by both sides.

Whilst the traditional reason given for the Sepoy mutiny was their refusal to use a new cartridge that they believed was smeared in animal fat, this was more of a pretext than the fundamental reason.
Resentment had been growing against East India Company rule in many quarters.
Hereditary rulers were losing power and status.
Religious Indians feared the British wanted to convert them to Christianity.
Others resented the general replacement of Indian customs and laws with British ones.
Landowners resented losing rights to peasants.
Within the army, there was already disquiet over stagnation of wages, lack of promotion opportunities and a growing gulf between Indian sepoys and their British officers.
The Hindus in the Bengal army were also alarmed that the East India Company was recruiting a growing number of Muslims and Sikhs into their ranks - diluting their own identity and influence.
All it needed was a cause to coalesce around...and that is where the new cartridges came in.
As Indian (Hindu) sepoys refused to even touch the cartridges tensions grew.
Across northern Indian chappatis (flat bread) started to be passed from village to village.
No one knew where they came from or why they were being passed, but it was seen as a sign of monumental change.
That change came in May 1857 when the Indian troops at Meerut mutineed, killing British officers and civilians, before marching on (and seizing) the old Mughal capital, Delhi.
There, they captured the undefended magazine and were given the endorsement of the ageing Mughal Emperor.
Across northern India, sepoys began to follow their lead...

The use of animal grease on the cartridges of the newly introduced Enfield rifles was the last straw. While loading the rifles, soldiers had to bite off the end of the cartridges. It was made up of either pig or cow fat, which violated the religious sentiments of the Muslim and Hindu soldiers.
In 1857, three regiments of the army refused to use the ammunition for the Enfield rifles. These men were disbanded. Then later another 85 soldiers disobeyed orders to load their rifles. They were arrested. The rest of the soldiers mutinies on May 19, 1857. These men marched on to Delhi and demanded that the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, take over as the ruler of India and the head of the rebels. Though he reluctantly agreed, the British defeated him and sent him into exile in Burma, where he dies in 1862.

https://mocomi.com/ presents: The Sepoy Mutiny
The Indian soldiers who fought for the British were among the first to revolt against them too. Watch this video and learn what caused them to fight against the people who employed them.

BATTLEFIELDS, VOL. 1
Conor likes it when Garth Ennis writes war comics, because then Garth Ennis makes his best comics. Luckily Dynamite has given him the ability to do so, and we get this trio of World War II tales with BATTLEFIELDS, VOL. 1. ORIGINALLY RELEASED FEBRUARY 10, 2010
It’s a good old fashioned Vault show! Conor goes back to the big one with Battlefields. Ron takes us to the roots of Image Comics with Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN, and Josh talks about the horror of violence in Africa with Unknown Soldier.
1. Collecting “The Night Witches,” “Dear Billy,” and “Tankies,” Ennis and his exceptional artists bring unique corners of the war right to the reader, and it is captivating.
SPAWN ORIGINS, VOL. 1
Todd McFarlane was as big a creator as there was when he left Marvel and co-founded Image Comics, and SPAWN was his masterpiece, and it’s still going today. Ron was a big, big fan back then, and still is today. Image is releasing high quality reprint collections of McFarlane’s signature creation, and it is still a good example of some pretty good comics.
UNKNOWN SOLDIER, VOL. 1: HAUNTED HOUSE
Writer Joshua Dysart captures a war torn Uganda and the absolute horrors of the harsh life there, and combines it with a new take on a classic DC property, creating the Unknown Soldier. Josh warns that it’s not a fun ride, but it is very well executed, and the art by Alberto Ponticelli is something special, and it’s an important work of comic fiction that’s uncomfortably close to reality.
