The 1998 XVI Commonwealth Games were held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 11 to 21 September 1998. The 1998 games were the first held in an Asian country and the last Commonwealth Games of the 20th century. This was also the first time the games took place in a country with a head of state other than the Head of the Commonwealth. A record 69 nations (34 of which collected medals) competed, with 3,638 athletes participating. For the first time ever, the games included team sports.
The other bid from the 1998 games came from Adelaide in Australia.
Overview
Participating teams
69 teams were represented at the 1998 Games. (Teams competing for the first time are shown in bold).
The Commonwealth Games (known as the British Empire Games from 1930–1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954–1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970–1974) is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, which were cancelled due to World War II, has taken place every four years since then.
The games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which also controls the sporting programme and selects the host cities. A host city is selected for each edition. 18 cities in seven countries have hosted the event. Apart from many Olympic sports, the games also include some sports that are played predominantly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls and netball.
Although there are 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 71 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flag. The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—also send separate teams. Only six countries have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales. Australia has been the highest achieving team for twelve games, England for seven, and Canada for one.
The 1950 British Empire Games was the fourth edition of what is now called the Commonwealth Games. It was held in Auckland, New Zealand between 4 and 11 February 1950, after a 12-year gap from the 3rd edition of the games. The main venue was Eden Park, although the closing ceremonies were held at Western Springs Stadium, see New Zealand at the 1950 British Empire Games. The fourth games were originally awarded to Montreal, Canada and were to be held in 1942 but were cancelled due to World War II.
At the 1950 British Empire Games all the teams won at least one medal.

The 1982 Commonwealth Games Logo was designed by Paulo Ferreira, who was the winner of a nationwide competition held in 1978. The symbol is derived from the form of a bounding kangaroo. The three bands, forming stylized A's (for Australia), are in colours which are common to flags of many Commonwealth countries.
Matilda the kangaroomascot for the 1982 Commonwealth Games was represented by a cartoon kangaroo, and a gigantic 13-metre (42 feet 8inches) high mechanical "winking" kangaroo, who travelled around the stadium and winked at the crowd.
India (Syriac: Beth Hindaye) was an ecclesiastical province of the Church of the East, from the seventh to the sixteenth century. The Malabar Coast of India had long been home to a thriving East Syrian (Nestorian) Christian community, known as the St. Thomas Christians. The community traces its origins to the evangelical activity of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. The Indian Christian community were initially part of the metropolitan province of Fars, but were detached from that province in the 7th century, and again in the 8th, and given their own metropolitan bishop.
Due to the distance between India and the seat of the Patriarch of the Church of the East, communication with the church's heartland was often spotty, and the province was frequently without a bishop. As such, the Indian church was largely autonomous in operation, though the authority of the Patriarch was always respected. In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived in India and tried to bring the community under the authority of the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. The Portuguese ascendancy was formalised at the Synod of Diamper in 1599, which effectively abolished the historic Nestorian metropolitan province of India. Angamaly, the former seat of the Nestorian metropolitans, was downgraded to a suffragan diocese of the Latin Archdiocese of Goa.
India is the first studio album by Spanish singer Vega, released on November 7, 2003 on Vale Music Spain.
History
This album represents her success after having sold more than 200.000 copies of her first single "Quiero Ser Tú" (Spanish for "I Want to Be You"), which was a task to be accomplished before being entitled to a recording contract. The album itself sold more than 110.000 copies in Spain alone.
The country, India, has always been an inspiration to Vega, and that is why she decided to name her album after it. All but two songs on the album, "That's Life" (Frank Sinatra cover) and "Believe" (K's Choice cover), were written by Vega. The eighth track, "Olor A Azahar", is dedicated to the city she was born in.
The first single from India was "Grita!", which became the best-selling single of 2003 in Spain. After the success of the first single, "La Verdad (ft. Elena Gadel)" and "Directo Al Sol" followed. Elena Gadel, a member of the girl-group Lunae, whom Vega had met during the time they were part of Operación Triunfo, also helped with the background vocals for "Grita!".

Kuala Lumpur was elected to stage the Games during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly held in Barcelona, during the 1992 Olympics, having chosen over a bid from Adelaide, Australia in a 40-25 decision.
For although this was the last Games of the millennium, it was in many ways, the first of its new era as Kuala Lumpur 1998 marked the debut of team sports at the event; cricket, field hockey, netball and rugby sevens were included in the most expansive sports programme ever seen at a Commonwealth Games. According to then-CGF chairman Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales, the inclusion of team sports was all part of a drive to give the Commonwealth Games a "more modern image at the turn of the century."
It soon became clear that the Kuala Lumpur Games would be undertaken with more teams and participants than ever before, as the event attracted 3,638 athletes from 70 Commonwealth member nations and territories. These 70 participating delegations include first-timers Kiribati and Tuvalu, as well as Mozambique and Cameroon - former colonies of Portugal and France respectively, both of which have admitted to the Commonwealth as member states in 1995 despite not having any historical link to Britain.
At their home turf, Malaysia had enjoyed its best Commonwealth Games performance in their history, finishing with 10 golds and 36 medals overall, which is good for a fourth-place finish. Australia came out as the overall winners with 198 medals - 80 of which were gold, finishing on top ahead of England with 36 golds, and Canada, which rounded up the top three with 30 gold medals.

Is Singapore ready to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games?
As Singapore assesses the feasibility of an invitation to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, some experts say that a lack of sporting facilities could be a hurdle. However, winning the right to stage the event could boost the Singapore brand and improve the local sporting scene, others believe. CNA's Aslam Shah reports.

Our Mission: It is our hope that a more sophisticated awareness, and in-depth knowledge, of what lies at the “heart” of 21st century pop culture, will allow families and individuals to more clearly distinguish well intended authentic entertainment from deceptively crafted propaganda, which attacks the minds, confuses the senses and rips apart the fabric of society.

The Commonwealth Games went to Asia for the first time in its 68-year history as the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur plays host to the event's 16th iteration held from 11 to 21 September 1998. Though these Games were taken place in the midst of the Asian financial crisis during that time, Malaysia has organized the event without a hitch.

69 teams were represented at the 1998 Games. (Teams competing for the first time are shown in bold).

About a week ago, the 2022 Commonwealth Games took place in Birmingham, England. Many joined from different parts of the country and world to attend this event. During the opening ceremony, though, something very interesting took place: a giant bull was brought out onto the stage and was being worshipped! Could this be a way of ushering in literal idol worship to the western world?
