THE CASABLANCA RESTAURANT MURAL
CASABLANCA RESTAURANT 12' x 22' ft. MURAL
Twenty-one years ago, in 1995, when I was 31 yrs. old, I designed and airbrushed this mural inside of the dining area at Casablanca Restaurant in Metairie, Louisiana. I did the huge painting on location, and it took about a month to finish, working on scaffolding and ladders. The mural has lasted well over the years, even through a close call during Hurricane Katrina when the roof caved in the center of the room, but the mural was miraculously left undamaged. It looks as good today as the day I first painted it.
I recently shot this video of the mural, but what even more interesting is the music I found to accompany it. It's the enchanting voice of Ofra Haza, Israeli pop star from the 80's. I only recently, like yesterday, found out who she was, ...

I only recently, like yesterday, found out who she was, but oddly I had loved her music for years not knowing it was her.
It goes all the way back to 1987, when I first heard the song, "Paid In Full" by hip hop duo Erik B. and Rakim. The song features a lot of musical sampling from a variety of entertaining sources all mixed together, among which is the enchanting voice of a Middle-Eastern lady singing. For almost 30 years I've thought of "Paid In Full" as one of my all time favorite old school early rap favorites, mostly because of the lady chanting and the cool beat, and when I shot this video, and even when I was painting this mural 21 years ago, the song "Paid In Full" came to mind a lot, because of the woman's enchanting singing. Well, I tried mixing "Paid In Full" with my video, and I looked at it, and something told me it just wasn't right. It was all the hip hop music in the background, it just didn't fit the restaurant. The restaurant is Kosher, it's not a discotheque. I could in no way be disrespectful to the restaurant or the owners, Linda and Simon, who are dear friends.
So I researched who the woman's voice in the song, which led me to discovering all about Ofra Haza, Israeli singing sensation from the 80's. She was described as the "Madonna of the East". I was fascinated to learn about her music career and tragic end. At the height of her career, her singing was featured in Disney's "The Prince of Egypt", and she was supposed to sing the chanting music in the movie "Gladiator", that I'd been familiar with for years, but was unable to do so due to her fatal illness. The singing you hear in the movie is unmistakably modelled after Ofra Haza's style of singing.
I was able to find the song that Ofra Haza sang that Erik B. and Rakim sampled. It's called "Im Nin'Alu", and when I heard it in it's original form I was blown away. I said this is it. ...Please enjoy!
And check out these lyrics to the English translation of the song... "Im Nin'Alu" translates to "If (the Doors) are Shut" ....Amazing!
IF (THE DOORS) ARE SHUT
(Even) If the doors of the righteous will shut
The Doors of Heaven will still be open
The Living God will exalt them by Cherubs
All will raise by his Spirit
Living God
Since they are close to his Throne
They will thank His Name and praise
The sacred animals (holly beasts) will run around
From the Day of Creation they were included (at God's Throne)
Wheels and cycles are in uproar
Thanking His Name and blessing
Surrounded by the glamour of His glory
Living God
By the power of their six wings
They are flying around and swirling
They will answer by a pleasant voice of their songs
And together, by miracles ensigned
(Even) If the doors of the righteous will shut
The Doors of Heaven will still be open
Living God
