BIG DAMAGE - Illegal Logging in Papua New Guinea (FULL FILM)
This is a shorter version of the film BIKPELA BAGARAP (Big Damage). The longer version of the film can be watched on the film's website: http://www.bikpelabagarap.com/
BIG DAMAGE reveals the human face of logging in Papua New Guinea.
It is a tale of exploitation and broken promises, where local people are treated as second-rate citizens in their own country by Malaysian logging companies and corrupt politicians.
Customary landowners are forced into signing documents they don't understand, for the promise of "development" -- fresh water, health and education, but these essential services are rarely provided. Instead, their traditional hunting grounds are destroyed, waterways polluted, and their way of life ruined forever.

This New AI Forensic Tool is Fighting Illegal Logging
At about $150 billion per year, the illegal logging trade is the most profitable environmental crime in the world. A majority of which is often controlled by international organized criminal networks. To slow down this illegal enterprise, an interdisciplinary team at the Forest Products Laboratory have developed a machine learning system that can identify whether timber shipments are of illegal origin. Today, this emerging technology is being field tested across the globe.

Illegal logging endangers south Philippines
When a tropical storm struck the south of the Philippines in December, killing more than 1,000 people, illegal logging was blamed for making the damage much worse.
More than a month later, the logging ban is still being ignored. This, combined with rapid urbanisation and a lack of preparedness, are contributing to what some in the country are calling "a modern-day-natural calamity".

"It's a monstrous machine... bulldozers go through our woodland, we feel the effects of the corruption in this country", explains a local. According to Greenpeace, between 15 and 30% of all wood imported into Europe is done so illegally. In Cameroon it is an industry worth 100 million Euros a year. Besides creating a tax shortfall of 80 million Euros, it is also destroying the vast ecological reserves in the nation's forests. "The forestry commission is complicit", discloses Flavian, an investigator into local logging company SBAC; "corruption affects the entire chain". From companies to state officials, the beneficiaries are far removed from those who live near the trees. With just 5% of Cameroon's ancient woodland remaining, the sacrifice of this ecosystem to the forces of globalisation is a tangible, and preventable, global loss.
