Bells Hill, west of Knights Hill, is the highest point in the range at 803 metres (2,635ft)AHD on the range's plateau; with a number of other peaks on the escarpment ranging from 300 metres (980ft) to a maximum of 768 metres (2,520ft) at Mount Murray southwest of Dapto.
History
The escarpment or scarp was created between 225 to 280 million years ago and since eroded by creeks to its present height around 30 million years ago. Most of it is sandstone, with many Hawkesbury sandstone boulders and ledges visible in addition to the actual cliffs. Its maximum heights are reached in the south, west of Albion Park at Knights Hill, 709 metres (2,326ft), and Mount Murray, 768 metres (2,520ft). This forms the eastern edge of the Southern Highlands plateau, uplifted along with the Blue Mountains around 70 million years ago.
The Illawarra region is characterised by three distinct districts: the north-central district, which is a contiguous urban sprawl centred on Lake Illawarra; the western district defined by the Illawarra escarpment, which leads up to the south-west fringe of Greater Metropolitan Sydney including the Macarthur and Southern Highlands regions; and the southern district, which is historically semi-rural (area undefined), yet now defined by increasing urbanisation.
Geography
The region consists of a coastal plain, narrow in the north and wider in the south, bounded by the Tasman Sea on the east and the mountainous, almost impassable Illawarra escarpment (forming the eastern edge of the Southern Highlands plateau) to the west. In the middle of the region is Lake Illawarra, a shallow lake formed when sediment built up at the entrance to a bay. The district extends from the southern hills of the Royal National Park in the north to the Shoalhaven River in the south, and contains the city of Wollongong, the third-largest urban area in New South Wales. North of Wollongong the plain narrows to a small strip of land between the coast and the escarpment. At Coalcliff and Stanwell Park small valleys are formed allowing further settlement. To the south it widens, and becomes increasingly hillier before reaching Stockyard Mountain, a long divide between the main plain and the Jamberoo Valley, which stretches until it reaches Kiama. South of Kiama is Saddleback Mountain and south of that the Shoalhaven plains and the outcrop of Coolangatta Mountain.

We did take a short diversion north along the Forest Walk to check out Coalcliff Dam
The dam, which was owned by the Illawarra Coke Company was used for its now-closed coke-making operations at Coalcliff.
From here we headed back south along the track eventually arriving at Sublime Point where you will have one of the most amazing uninterrupted views making you feel like you’re on the edge of the world.
NOW this is where the fun begins.
Sublime Point walking track is one of the iconic treks of the Illawarra escarpment.
This exhilarating track hugs the cliff face and has a series of ladders and a giant staircase allowing you to rock-hop your way down to Austinmer.
At the end of this trail follow the road a further 1.5km downhill until you eventually arrive at Austinmer station.
Note. Consider downloading the Alltrails App. This is a valuable tool that will track your exact location using GPS.
Always download the trail you are about to do while you have mobile range as the GPS tracking will still operate when mobile signals are lost

Out and about in the Illawarra Escarpment State Forest
Entering from the top of Stephen Drive in Woonona we followed deer trails and made our way up the escarpment through dense bush.
