Magnetos | 60 Second Flight Training
What are magnetos & how do they work?
Another episode in our brand new flight training series from US Sport Flight Academy: 60 Second Flight Training! 60 Second Flight Training will involve quick lessons, often 60 seconds or less, on key knowledge areas that you'll need to understand for your Private or Sport Pilot Checkride!
Full Transcript:
Sam here from US Sport Aircraft bringing you a quick lesson on magnetos!
Magnetos are engine-driven units that generate electrical current. A rotating magnet excites a fixed coil of wires that send out current to the correct spark plug at the correct time.
Modern piston-engine airplanes have a dual ignition system, which means they have two sets of spark plugs, each set supplied with energy by its own magneto.
Two separate magnetos – left and ri...

In one of our previous videos, we have discussed the Battery Coil Ignition System. But, some engines are too small to accommodate a battery for the ignition system. One such example is the Gasoline operated Lawnmowers.
So, do you know what kind of Ignition System they use?
They use the Magneto Coil Ignition System. Here, a magneto, an engine-driven small generator is used as an energy source of the system instead of the battery.
In this video, we have exclusively explained the construction, working, advantages and disadvantages of the Magneto Ignition System.
Magneto consists of primary and secondary windings wound over it and there is also a permanent magnet. All other components of the system and the working are similar to that of Battery Coil Ignition System.
The system has an ignition switch, a contact breaker, capacitor, distributor and the spark plugs.
When the magnet rotates, the flux linkage with the coil changes which induces an emf in the primary coil. The current due to this emf flows through the primary circuit. But, as soon as the contact breaker opens, the circuit breaks and the magnetic field around it collapses. This induces a very high voltage in the secondary coil which is used for producing the sparks.
This system requires less space and less maintenance. But, the intensity of the spark produced at low speeds will be less. This is its major disadvantage.
Stay tuned to know about the other types of the ignition system.

Two separate magnetos – left and right – supply the energy to the two spark plugs contained in each cylinder. Each magneto fires one spark plug per cylinder, creating an efficient, redundant system that allows the engine to operate at full power independent of the engine-driven alternator.
So unlike your car, if your alternator fails and the battery goes out, your aircraft engine would continue to run because of the magnetos.
When you do an engine run-up before take-off, you’ll perform a mag drop check to verify that both magnetos are working and falling within required tolerances. When you cycle a magneto off during the check you are anticipating a certain RPM drop associated with running the cylinder on half ignition.
If you notice a significantly higher drop in RPMs it could be a sign you are experiencing some form of carbon deposit in that spark plug gap, and you’ll want to lean out the mixture and increase power to try and “burn off” that excess carbon.
Make sure you have each and every cylinder firing and producing peak power before you fly!

US Sport Flight Academy is a branch of US Sport Aircraft. Since 2006, US Sport Aircraft has sold over 600 aircraft, trained over 4000 pilots, and revolutionized flight training in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. And that was just the beginning.
With the tripling of our flight instruction team, addition of dozens of new programs, and acquisition of a brand new flight training facility at Addison Airport, we have created the new benchmark for modern and efficient flight training!
At US Sport Flight Academy you can earn your sport, private, instrument, commercial, multi, CFI, CFII, MEI, and more! And the best part? A guaranteed interview upon completion of our CFI program. You’ll build time as a flight instructor until reaching airline minimums – that’s just 2 years from zero to airline pilot!
A unique feature of flight training at US Sport Flight Academy is that we also offer unconventional programs such as aerobatic training, tail wheel training, upset recovery, and more! You name it, we teach it!
We offer both self-paced and accelerated training at a fraction of the cost of competing flight schools, and you’ll be doing it in brand new to late-model aircraft. Forget those rusty broken down antiques they fly at those other schools! A wide variety of aircraft and advanced glass cockpit avionics for as low as $125 an hour can’t be beat anywhere else – guaranteed!
Our team is here and ready to fly – give us a call and make your dreams become a reality!

Studying for the Private Pilot Oral Exam? This guide is a great start and one I personally used for my own training and with students when working as a Flight Instructor - https://amzn.to/3GyZSDl
Want to learn more about aircraft systems but focusing on what pilots need to know? - https://amzn.to/3IgXvWJ
You can SUBSCRIBE by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOTbYtdmGZfqxq0D0lsrYeQ?sub_confirmation=1
In this first tutorial of aircraft basics, the ignition system of a piston engine airplane is discussed.
What happens if the master switch it turned off in flight? Will the engine still run or will it quit as it will in a car with an electrical failure? Those questions will be answered along with what magnetos are and what they do for redundancy and safety in aircraft.
This video is for entertainment purposes only. For use with Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC and XBOX.
